On 3fe, in rear above crank to the left. Is this the oil galley plug that famously leaks? How can I fix it? Weld it?

Anyone?

That is not it. It's the tiny aluminum plug in the boss above cylinder #5. I know it well.

While that is not the one mentioned so famously that is in-fact an oil galley. 2Fs and 3Fs have them. It goes straight through the block and out the front with a similar plug.

Yours appears to have been leaking. Pull it out, inspect it, and put a sealant of your choice on it. Or buy a new one. The factory part may come with sealant on the threads already. So no need there.

The plug in my truck's original motor popped out at 70,000 miles...

@Bomar 's popped out of his 3FE around 150K, luckily caught before any damage.

They can let go at any time.

That bill hurts to look at. I can't imagine how angry I'd be if that happened to any vehicle at 70K.

Ok, thanks everyone! I'll repair this one and make sure the famous one is adequately repaired

Cam, does that shortblock have a serial number stamped into it?

No. Replacement blocks have a blank pad.

Oh, they gave the block away on that invoice.

Just checking, The block in my 79 FJ40 is not stamped. I always suspected it was a factory replacement.

Noticed that's a Customer pay RO. Did toyota not stand behind their product @ 70k? Seen a lot stranger things paid by the factory outside of "normal" warranty parameters. I know this is from way back... Just curious.
Got all nostalgic over that old school ADP layout too. :)

I guess not, other than the discount on the short block. My dad bought this new. I still have all sorts of old paperwork, including the window sticker and dot-matrix build sheet printed in Japanese:grinpimp:

The plug popped out while someone else had borrowed the truck - they thought the motor quit because it ran out of gas

I don't know how long it takes to pump all oil from the truck, but I'm not sure I would have caught it either. I don't keep my eye on the oil pressure gauge.

The block was invoiced for almost 1,000 dollars below the then-current dealer cost.

I need to do this fix on 2 of my 60's. I have read all the threads I can find and I have decided I would really rather not re-drill the hole or remove the head bolt. Can someone confirm the optimum size tap and plug to use WITHOUT re-drilling the factory gallery plug hole? I really don't want to introduce the number of shavings into the head that high speed drilling would produce, even if I did remove the head bolt and stuff the hole, purge the gallery with the engine running or take other remedial measures.

I have read everything from 6mm to 8mm to 5/16, even some other sizes. Looking for the best diameter as well as thread count.

Thanks guys
