so after a bit of a debate about using 30 weight in the winter in diesels i deceded to do a bit of reading and in the owners manual for the 79 series trucks i came across this:
Engine oil selection:
Oil Grade10W-30 and 5W-30
API grade SL energy conserving
SM enegy conserving or ILSAC multigrade engine oil.

recommended viscosity (SAE)
5/30 for -20C up to +10C
0/30 for -16C up to +38C

there was no 40 weight oil recommended for the diesel engines by Toyota for below -10C

this is pulled from the owners manual 2006 HZJ79 series.

cheers

Wayne:

Just wondering why a diesel owner's manual would be recommending an "S" rated oil meant for gassers? Shouldn't it be recommending a "C" rated diesel oil at the very least?

this listing was for the gasser and the diesel engines, i posted the gasser specs as well...

Those numbers don't make any sence to me at all.

The 0-30 (thinner) should be better for lower temps. The fact that they are both /30 says that they won't thin more than a 30 weight oil when hot and therefore should have similar maximum operating temps.

Maybe its a typo and the 0/30 should actually be 10/30

Bruce,
i just copied what was in the book...
cheers
