I heard Walmart sells Toyota filters now, maybe you have one closer than the dealership. I have also used the WIX filters from the autoparts store too, it is good quality.

I used to think the same thing, and I understand we are talking extreme minority, but it was a wix filter with an internal problem that I read about destroying the engine in an 80-series.I have also used the WIX filters from the autoparts store too, it is good quality.
Yep - use my M18 impact for smaller stuff and the large 1/2” M18 for the big stuff. And as for skid plate bolts.. literally the most game-changing tool I’ve ever bought:

So I got a new filter kit and took the old one off and was expecting/hoping to see the large o-ring nicked or in some way buggered up so I would know why it was leaking. Upon inspection, I could see/feel no obvious damage and the o-ring was in the proper groove. Hmm. I put a new o-ring on and put it all back and the leak appears to be stopped. All I can figure is that it was over tightened. I'm certain it was overtightened as it was diffecult to get off and the install torque spec is only 19 ftlbs. Maybe overtightening it deforms the o-ring in some way so that it leaks. IDK.
Great photo, thanks. I did wonder about the bottom grove but I was pretty sure that wans't right as my filter housing has some little tabs in the bottom groove that would prevent the o-ring from working.Just to be perfectly clear, "proper groove" is up in the thread area, not at the base - as shown in this pic:

I moved the part of the o-ring that is not in the grove.
