Over the years I've seen these installed from the factory on some (not all) FF rear axles used on late model 40 series, 70 series and 80 series. Never on 60 series.
Obviously (to me) they are designed to control the lube flowing inside the housing.
What I'd like to know is what is the issue that they are supposed to prevent?
My 60 series wagons with FF axles (and no deflectors) have been used and abused for many years and never any failures or leaks.
As seen in the photos, the deflectors are made of thin sheet metal and most I see are rusty.
Why are they used on some but not all FF axles?
Since they are not used on semi floaters, my guess is that they are intended to reduce the amount of oil that flows outboard towards the axle shaft seals.
