I have a 96 Lancruiser and a couple of weeks ago the oil light went on, I checked the oil and added 2 quartz. I was told that these truck can consume oil between oil changes. I'm curios if anyone has similar issues or should I be concerned about that it may be something wrong.

The truck is driven by my wife and only to do the usual pick the kid from school, shopping. I put the most miles on the weekends, but only freeway driving.

I got the truck with 74k miles and its at 85k at the moment.

thanks

CruiserDan may correct me, but I believe that Toyota believes 1 quart of oil useage/750 miles to be acceptable.

If the vehicle is new to you, watch and see how much you are using. If the problem just started, be attentive about leaks, burning etc.

thanks for the reply.

I had the truck a year. Had several oil changes already. I'll keep an eye. It is due for an oil change already. If I had taken it when the sticked said it was due (74k) I would have not noticed.

Any specific sign I should look for in case its burning oil, which was one of my concerns.

thanks

mine burned a quart about every 4000 miles. I always kept a quart in the truck and checked about every 1000 miles.

after it's put back together this week (head gasket) i'll see if the new valve seals change that consumption rate.

My truck has almost 200k on it and at 5k oil intervals I have never added any oil. I do have two slow leaks also, more like an occational drip.

You might try changing brands of oil also. Some have reported large swings in consumption from doing this.

If you have the Jiffy Lubes changing your oil, they may not know that the LC takes +-8 qts. It is a common occurance at these places that not enough oil is added back to get to proper levels. Just top back up and watch it close/check it weekly....It may be nothing......

My 93 used approx 1 qt, no real problem, just checked it evry few fill ups at the gas station or the light would warn me I was low. I didn't have any leaks on my driveway and oil is cheap, so it really didn't bothre me. I did however have less consumption when I switched from Mobil One 10-30 to Rotella Synthetic 5-40.

Like people have said, it varies. I normally don't use any in 5000 mile changes, but recently was down 1/2 quart after 3500 miles with Mobil1 0w-40. My next change will be at the 100k mark.

While it might use a little, the fact that you can fit a couple extra quarts in front of the battery compartment makes it very convenient to add at least.

:) I keep two quarts and a rag (to check the oil) there!:D

Thanks everyone for your replies. I actually take the truck to a shop that only work on LCs. The first time I did take the LC to EZLube and they put the wrong size filter. Since then its being going to the specialist.

More likely than not you may have oil leaks. Several with the LC only leak under operating pressure and therefore do not show up in the driveway. Rear seal, oil pump seal, etc.. Check those out and go from there. Good luck.

I change oil every 3000 miles, and I never have to add oil between changes. As far as I can tell, I don't burn or leak ANY and the level doesn't change even a little bit.

Once at proper level, check your oil daily until you have peace of mind what's going on with your motor - probably something very minor if at all. Make certain you start out with the full 7.8 qts and a quality filter. At the very worst you might have a seep that reveals itself under operating pressure only - perhaps something you can live with and even remedy using an oil such as Rotella 5-40 or comparable. We'll be waiting to hear! :bounce:

Thanks everybody.. I'll be taking the truck in for service this week or the next and will mention it the mechanic. After he does the service I'll monitor the oil level often and see if I can see how soon it starts to go down..

I really appreciate the responses. this is my first post in this forum.
lots of knowledgeable people here.

thanks.
