Hi everyone, well i recently purchased a 1997 LX450 and I would like to get the oil change in it for my own sake, but after reading some of the forum posts on this subject and still clueless. I know that most of the forum member recommend the Toyota oil filter (small or large still debated) or the Wix or Napa Gold. I think i would be pretty safe with those choices, but what I dont know the answer to is what weight of oil to put in my vehicle. It has approximately 149k on it and I live in San Antonio, TX where the weather does get pretty hot. Any suggestions on the weight and brand of oil to run? Before anyone says search the forum...I did this already, but no specific answer to my question. Thank you everyone..Marty

If it has run conventional oil all of it's life, there is no need to switch now to synthetic. There will be numerous opinions about this, but IMHO the best bang for the buck is Chevron Delo 15w-40. It costs roughly $12 per gallon, gives near synthetic performance, and has a very robust additive package. It is available everywhere. In Texas, you could run this oil year-round.

While you are changing oil on a new truck, consider exchanging the transmission fluid too.

I run Valvoline 20W-50 with the Napa Gold 1515 (big Wix).

10w-30 works for me.......any of the top brands do the job well.

I would't overthink this, motor oil these days have practically been perfected to the point where there is really little difference between the top brands.
I personally would'nt mess around with different weights of oils unless you live in an extremely warm climate or on an iceberg.:D

The key here is to change the stuff every 3K or possibly longer with synthetic. Its the dirty oil that will accelerate the wear in your engine like no tommorrow along with the loss of viscocity over time.
I just use penzoil 10w-30 or whatevers on sale.

.

Andrew, I may take your suggestion on oil weight. Please excuse my ignorance, but I went to wally world and noticed they had the Chevron 15w 40 and the container mentioned it for diesel engines. Is this the right stuff?

Yep, that's what it's made for but runs fine in any engine.

Later,

10W30 Mobil One Mobil One filter.

Depending on how retentive you are, there are many ways to do this.

As mentioned, I probably wouldn't overthink this.

Some have used oil analysis as a way to get a reading on the status of their engines. Do a search for it. I'm sure someone will chime in. Since you just bought this, it may not be a bad idea.

I wish I had, o/w I'd be driving my rig instead of doing a HG and radiator purge.

Yes, but it's a "mixed fleet" oil with an SM rating for gasoline motors as well. It will work great in your Land Cruiser.
