I have two cases....the cracked OEM TC on my 78 has no stamped serial number that U can see. The rebuilt one I bought has a number stamped on the case housing. Anyone know why one would have a numberand the other would not? What do the numbers mean on the stamped case? date of production? Other than that they are identical one piece cases.

:meh:

How about some pictures?

I have seen a date code on the cases.

I have not seen a Toyota serial number on the cases....

I have seen other shops stamp numbers into cases that they have allegedly gone through...

SURE....I appreciate any help!

First picture is of my old original case (11/77 production?)

Second picture is of my new rebuilt case in the same spot.

PM me...I lost my phone and just got my voicemails the other day and heard where you called....sorry call me if you want

This growing warmth between you 2 dudes is making me uneasy:hmm:

so the date code is where I have indicated correct? What are the numbers on Joe's top TC???? Never seen those B4.

Though the date code pad is still there on all one-piece cases, they stopped whacking the numbers on the pad and moved them to the rear surface of the case at the end of 1976. Why dey do dat? dunno.:meh:

So your pic is correct for E-76 and ColReb's '77 case is also period correct.

The pictured 1977 code is 7=1977, L=12th letter=December, 0170= 170th case produced in December 1977

thanks for sharing that info, it is very useful. How did you find this out?

Wrote down the code off every case in the shop and compared to what was known (application, build date) about it. Became obvious when the sample size was large enough.

Same for engine block, cyl head, carb, fuel pump, diffs, etc. with a big enough sample, the connection pops into focus.

I'm still mystified by the really early (E-63) carb codes?

I have 2 cases, one easily deciphered, the other kinda wierd.
6KT5315
this one appears to be a Nov 1976, 5315 one cast that month

FH0855H no idea but is in 8/75 FJ40 and appears identical to above.

Jim, can you check me on this?

Dave, those are odd looking codes.

The 6K5315 would be pretty straightforward, except for that extra letter tossed into he middle.

FH0855H is gobblegook. If it is an 8/75, then '5' is year and 'H' is month, but what is the rest, why is it out of order? Dunno....

That's what I figured.

I would not put money on the second one that is currently in my truck as the original. Plus I could error on reading them too as they are not all 100% obvious.
