I need new OEM tail lights for a 1978 fj40. If someone could provide links to both sides, I would really appreciate it. I have looked on and off for the past 6 months and can only seem to find aftermarket or one side only.

6 months on and off, yeah. In today's world, if you aren't a mechanic or know all the reputable storefronts, I found it best to ask the experts on here. I actually found that page this morning, but I know nothing about them which is why I wanted to ask. So, thank you.

You can also still get them from Toyota. I just replaced the right tail light assembly for $65....part 81550-60191

I just called Toyota and they are discontinued for a 1978. Is yours a 78?
Yep. I just looked and the left is discontinued. I didn’t notice this when I ordered because I only needed the right.
‘78 has been discontinued for quite a while, what you are seeing new is ‘79+

This is what I ran into and why it isn't easy to find. This has been the reason for my "on and off" searching.
I wonder what’s different between 78 and 79? I installed it last week and it looked identical to my left taillight. I guess my left was already a newer version?
Maybe I got lucky, but I ordered it because the description said it fit a 78.

OK, That's why this is confusing to someone who doesn't deal with this daily. I wonder if there's any chance the drivers side could just be flipped over?

I don’t think they can be flipped. The mounting holes won’t line up and there are drains built into the gaskets to let water out.
