Simple question.

How long a OEM radiator for a 3B engine can last ?

I'm try to figure if it better to rebuilt or go to OEM...

... how long ?

I had the original 3 core rad in my '82 BJ60 until 3 years ago when I installed A/C and had to upgrade to 4 core. It was still on the original core when I took it out without any leaks.
I bought an OEM 4 core, I figured if the original can last more than 20 years there's no need to go aftermarket.

I thought you guys up there could get some quality aftermarket radiators.
My parts shop gets some from Taiwan that are heavier and tougher than the real thing for half the OEM price
Keeps my 1HZ cool on the beach in L4 for hours.

Forget the rebuild if it has had corrosion as the metal will have lost some of its thickness .

Oh,how long will they last ?,my old 3F radiator lasted 17 years without proper maintenance:D

depends on (ab)use. most are good for 20 years, abuse can kill a rad in months...
get in good with your local Toyota shop and you should be able to pick one up for around 4 bills

I went through this debate a little while ago when I still had a Land Cruiser . I was thinking about putting another "good" used one, but it's a little bit of work to re and re the rad, and we all know it takes forever to properly burp the cooling system to get rid of all the air.

So, in the end, I purchased a brand new 4-core radiator from Toyota in Langley. After taxes it came to just about five bills in Canuckian bucks, but I thought it was worth it not to have to worry about that major component that keeps your engine happy for another 16 years...although I ended up selling the truck shortly after that  .

There was also a fairly new OEM thermostat already installed, and I immediately noticed that the water temp gauge needle was sitting a little bit lower at operating temps than it used to. Also, when I pushed my engine harder, it took a little longer for the needle to creep up a little, and it was faster at cooling off afterwards.

IMO, the stamped brass tanks that Toyota uses in their OEM rads are prone to pinholes forming because the die creates thin spots on the raised areas during the stamping process. In my old rad(s), the corrossion, cracking and leaks occured in precisely these areas. Even if you re-cored the old rad, you would still have to address these issues in the future...and your initial monetary savings will be gone along with your precious time and efforts.

Personally, if I had to do it again, I would still just buy a brand new OEM rad from Toyota. My 2 cents.

I am going through this now with my 2H in the Troopy. Since I cant get a new one from Toyota in the US I think I am going to use one from 4wheelauto. For 425CAD it seems like a bargin and I have never heard anything bad about them.

as long as that is a brand new one then that is a great price, pretty high for a recore though...

i have a radiator out of a BJ 42 (1981) that has been all checked over and pressure tested and restored, it was found to be in excellent condition.

i then had to get a new radiator to accomodate a power steering conversion so this one is no longer needed.......never been installed since the checkover.....don't know if this will help you but its here

$ 125.00 plus shipping

OK, Nice, I will go for the OEM.

But is someone know if the OEM radiator 16400-58160 (CDN BJ70) have 3 or 4 core ?

If you don't have A/C you don't need a 4 core rad.

Thank you all.

I got it tomorow (OME) for 397$ (CDN).

Salut ! :)

under $400.00 !
I was just quoted $575.00 for a new aftermarket... for an 84 BJ60 3B and get this, they had to move the lower rad hose connection as it came staggered and the exisitng one has both connections on the drivers side.

I too am looking for a good rad for an 84 BJ 3B. What range of years will fit an 84?

thanx

Stone, do you still have the part number for the rad? You've sold your truck so probably not.....

Sorry, I gave my receipts to Nick for warranty purposes. Someone with the EPIC should be able to come up with the number though...

I was just quoted $575.00 for a new aftermarket...

The list price is 497$
The garage price is 422$

Well, because I know the Toyota buddy, my price is 397,60$ (453$ w/tax)

So…. It’s always good to chat and make friend with the Toyota dealer guys ;)

Thankyou GB for the thread link. What a long read that was..haha

Yes my and most every other 3b, I think, has the inlet and outlet on the drivers side(or Port side for the sailors..if that is the left side pending how you are looking at your toy!)

The local rad shop that quoted me the 575 said it was no problem to move the outlet to the opposite side but that seems like a 2nd rate way of fixing things.
I just received this quote as well for a 1984 Toyota Landcruiser
> Model BJ60 with the 3B diesel engine and a manual 5 spd.

Hi,

The part is in stock. Part # G1000-56408, Radiator.
