I have a 1978 BJ40. The odometer just froze. The tenths of a mile work but the rest are just stuck. Any ideas? Can I just get in there with a screwdriver and poke and prod until the miles just unfreeze? Or has someone else had something like this happen?

Search in the 40's section. There's a dismantling and lubricating post for the odometer.

You can take them apart and find what is broken.

No need to poke and pry.

I recently cleaned mine using the thread above and it works great now. The original grease was petrified and keeping the wheels from turning. I re-lubed mine with Corrosion-X gun lube instead of grease. Another good idea (can't remember if it's in the linked thread or a different one) is to swap some of the number wheels and little driving gear cogs left to right - the 1,000 and 10,000 wheels don't turn near as often as the others and are less worn.

thanx for posting.. i have the exact same issue as of late.. every so often the milage advances.. maybe 1 mile to every 100 miles travelled.. she thinks she found the fountain of youth! :D

My odometer froze up a while back, I sprayed silicone lube into the number wheels and rolled it back a few K's by hand, it started to work again and has worked for a few months now. Not as good as stripping and cleaning it properly I know, but it might be worth a try to save yourself sometime.
