Alright guys, I'm looking for some advice. After a lot of work, sweat and tears, my 40 is finally running great. I just completed a head job, and complete tune-up on my rig. Do any of you guys down here in Orange County, CA or Los Angeles know where I can find someone to install a tachometer? At a decent price... Please let me know.

I might be off-base, but this is something you can do really easily. I just put an Autometer 2891 in mine and it was a 30 minute job. One wire to hot, one to ground, one to the coil, one to a source to light up the gauge.

This is true. The autometer gauges come with good instructions and are not difficult to install. I have installed quite a few with my bezels.

Really? I was thinking there were things that required calibration. I guess I'll start looking up a thread. Is it accurate? My cruiser is running perfectly and I don't want to take any risks (not after all the work I've done).

Wiring them is simple as described above. Like falling off a bar stool simple. The tach wire goes to the coil negative post and then there is switched 12V and ground. I thought you were more interested in mounting the meter in a cosmetically acceptable fashion. Any shop can do it. I am not aware of any cruiser specific shop in OC. The closest is Jim Dickey in Gardena or Yotamasters in Corona.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to give it a try. Stand by for the numerous questions to follow. It sounds like the auto meter is a popular product. Well see how it goes,

Some of them also have a panel meter light wire that lights up when your dash lights are on. That wire might be the hard one as you have to get up under the dash.

The diesel versions do require calibration. The gas versions have tiny switches on the back under the dust cover that you have to set to specific spots depending on your number of cylinders. It is all layed out clearly in the instructions though. Almost any performance shop or parts store can get the gauges, you can save a few bucks through jegs or summit though.

Any autozone or the like should have them. One of the simplest mods you can do. I disconnect my neg. post on my battery anytime I do anything electrical. I think mine was a Sunpro, around 15-20 bucks.

You don't need a tach that reads to 10k...

X100 on being easy. I picked up a used Faria Tach for $5, easy install, made in USA.

Mounted over windshield wiper motor at the top off the windshield. Had a bracket on the wiper motor... Which was later replaced with an exhaust clamp around the front hoop of the six point cage.

Sunpro tach installed in my 40:

Don't forget the Autometer, I have mine mounted as 1911 does, but on top. I have the mini tach with 6K rpm. Item 2891 I believe.

On my 77's ignitor is a female bullet plug designed to accept a tach lead. I found its description on the wiring schematic. Easy peasy.

I really like the way that sun pro looks chupacabra. Great color on your rig. Thanks for the info blue. I'm heading to the store today. I'll let you guys know what I pick up.

I had an Autometer 5,000 rpm 2" tach for 20 years before it finally died. Great tachs, never bounce and look nice. Mine was doused in rain so many times I can't recall so it was also fairly watertight.
