I saw this thread the other day

Converting the ac compressor to an on board air set up sounds cool, but what are the pros and cons (other than cost)of doing this vs mounting an arb under the hood??

I would be doing it in a rig that the ac doesnt blow cold and I dont plan on fixing it.

I imagine it would come down to psi output and load handling.

If your planning to put in a York from a volvo or old ford there are many writeups in the 80 section. I don't know if the OEM compressor is a oil sump or is lubricated by the freon that's the hitch. Mine still blows cold so it wasn't an option. The Yorks are easily rebuildable and fabricating a bracket shouldn't be all that hard.

Since I dont need the air to run lockers I'm wondering if one of those portable compressors would be the ticket, not as high on the cool meter but maybe more useful on the trail. Another mudder had one at an event last year and a rig a few trucks ahead on a tight trail ended up needing air. I honestly cant remember if that one was a broken bead or tire puncture. But I do remember it was nice not to have to back down a hill and move the truck around a tight trail just to get the truck with air next to the truck that needed help.

It might also be nice to be able to swap it between vehicles when needed.

But yes much less sexy

if ya want portable air, its hard to beat a good co2 set up, but as far as compressors go, i would go york if ya can, they put out a ton of air and are a very durable compressor....

The stock compressor moves a bit of air, and if your AC is not working it is a viable option.

I know my evaporator coil was rotted, so I converted my ac over to OBA, and it worked great for airing up tires. It had enough air to run a 1/2 impact well enough to take lugs off tires. that was without a tank too.

You used the stock 2f compressor? I have been eyeing my compressor for oba. How does it get oil? How long have you been running it? Any tech on how/what you did? Some info would be great... I need this.
