why are they such rustbuckets, anyway? thin metal, poor drainage design, what?

and what are the tricks to counter that?

When I had the rust cut out of mine they recommended an annual application of "Crown" rust proofing. It seems to have worked reasonably well but you MUST do it each year or more frequently.
