Now just how did this hub break?

Hi all, new here. I've had my '89 62 for just over a year now, and something that's always bugged me is that the drivers side hub would never unlock. Today I'd thought it would be a good idea to take it apart and see what was going on.

Well, I found this:

I'm guessing this is what happens when the front end is in a bind, and someone thinks the best way to unlock the hub is with the biggest pair of channel-locks they can find?

Now it looks like with some careful bending and maybe a little persuasion from a medium-sized hammer, I can bend the prongs back so they will engage with the cams on knob again.

The other question I have is whether or not there are supposed to be two springs, or if its one continuous spring and mine just happened to break off?

That looks to me like it was assembled incorrectly.

My left hub was like that last year when I rebuilt it. (The right one was fine.) So I bent the tabs back into place, greased it up, made sure that it all worked smoothly, and haven't had a problem since. Maybe if I took it apart again, I'd see that it's bent again, but I really don't think so. Good luck trying to fix yours.

Oh yeah...and I think that your diagnosis about how it happened is probably spot on. At certain points in its life I'm convinced that my rig was owned by gorillas. Sorry, but I can't remember if it's one or two springs. Someone here will chime in with the answer soon, though.

Like someone did not have the knob in the right place and just force the bolts down? Can you confirm whether or not that spring is supposed to be two pieces or one?

Sorry, replied while you were. I guess I'm not allowed to have an edit button yet? Anyways, I'll try and straighten the tabs out and see if starts working again. Hopefully the spring is not an issue.

Yes there are supposed to be two springs.

Sweet deal. Guess I'll just bend the tabs back and slap it back together.

Yeah, I did that to mine and had no issues with it. Let us know how it turns out.

Bent the tabs back, put it back together and it works perfectly. Engages and disengages very smooth with little effort on the knob. These Aisin hubs seem to work so smoothly that it just boggles my mind how anyone could think that forcing them a proverbial "big wrench" could be in any way okay?

Just have to get a couple of new bolts, one broke as I was removing it - stud came out with a little heat. The other snapped off just as I put it in the hole with my hand? Never seen that happen before.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm sure I'll be back again,
