Saw a very cool new Unimog parked outside a local Marks Work Warehouse here in Langley, BC. It had dealer plates on it, and it looked brand new...so my guess is that it's being delivered to its new owners ready for work.

Never realized how HUGE some of these things are. Just for a size comparison, I parked my BJ74 with 33" tires and a 2" lift next to it. WOW!

The side view. I can just picture a custom aluminum camper on the back of that thing instead of a trayback. Where's that winning lottery ticket when I need it? :D

    The Meat!

Rear axle with some funky finned contraption at the pinion flange.

    The famous portals...drool!

Proof that this Mog is headed for a life of labour.

Is this some sort of generator bolted onto the side of this monster?

I wish the driver of this Mog was nearby when I was shooting the pics. I would have loved to have had a look inside and to chat about its specs. Beautiful piece of machinery. Thought I'd share. It was a chance for me to use my new Sony Cybershot DSC-T7 digital cam. :D

How much does a new Mog like this run? How much does the average used Mog go for? Just curious.

Wow, that is a seriously beefy rig! I've been thinking about that that propeller/fan-blade on the rear pinion, I can't think of anything that that would be used for...thought about as a propeller for water, but no way that thing would ever float so that's out...thought about maybe to rip through muck/weeds before the rear axle hits them, but that seems odd, and as well engineered as the rest of that is, that piece HAS to have a good explaination...somebody please find out!

Someone in my neighborhood had an older Mog with a small crane on it. There was a VW cabriolet in a parking lot for sale for a while and I guess he wanted a look at the drive train because when I drove by he had the VW lifted with the crane high enough for the axle to be over eye level. I can only imagine how pissed the owner of the car would've been to see that.

Is that large cylinder by the wheel some part of the brake system?

    someone posted this

    http://www.redcougar.ca/vehicle_inventory.htm

just buy a cheap used one!!!! well not cheap, but well used. If the gear boxes start making metal, bend over! think a cruiser tranny is expensive do ya? actually I have no experience with them and I am making general asumptions. pls go ahead, buy one a report back.

if tires for a cruiser are 1000-1300 a set, how much are they one one of these? 3k?

TYLER: You and I have the same illness. :D

e9999: This new camera is so small, I'll have to consciously make an effort not to obscure the lens again. :D

TJDIV: I think someone in BC drives one that's light blue. I've only ever seen it once though. I've seen more that were ex-Swiss Army radio trucks...those would make pretty cool RVs.

I just got back from a family reunion in Moab... to help transport all the relatives, we hired a Unimog guide to come out with us... He had a super cool 404 with a 5cyl MB turbo-diesel swap. Best thing, its a 14 passenger... :D

I know a guy who worked at a dealer. New cab and chassis-$95-$110k.
Local Freightliner dealers can get them.

That "generator" is the hydrylics for that boom on the back. Very cool. Add $15-$50k depending on the attachments.

best 4x4 in the world in my opinion...i have been researching them for years and eventually i will have one. the small mogs are great offroad but the larger one's like you see here are basically tow machines and tractors. talk about behicle recovery. the mog shown was probably around 150-175k ouch. as for the other mog its a 406 with a camper conversion. portal axels rule......stop this thread....these machines should remain a secret.

The local rednecks make a similar device as the fin on that drive shaft. they use an old auger for a drive shaft to move the mud so the rear dif doesn't bottom out.

You can get a decent 60's 404 for ~10,000 depending on motor and condition. I have seen some as low as 4 or 5 thousand though.

A new mog is like 125,000 here in the States.

One of the cool things about the new 'mog is the plastic body panels. They are made of rubbermaid like plastic. They look indestructable.

I can't help but think that that's a pretty good idea.

    Huh.
