Any idea what the difference is between the earlier one (60031) and this one? They look identical to me...
 
I think @3_puppies can tell us the answer. :)

the slip yoke splines are different and the U joints are larger on the earlier versions

going from memory this version is from 85? thru 90 on 60 and 62 series
 
Smaller u joint and boot and no zerk fitting on this one. I swapped mine to this 'later version' for convenience but kept the original to rebuild. Can't speak to pre 85 but @3_puppies has it right otherwise.

Not so sure on spline count change though, I believe they are the same from 80-90 and also into the 90s since those boxes can also bolt up.

differance in the U joint size and the spline differance between the early and late steering shafts
exact change over date I don't know, not sure if it was with the later bolt pattern steering gear box??

Ah! That spline, thought you meant on either end of assembly. The one for sale (45260-60080) is the supercession/replacement starting 8/87. But this will work for all 80-90 60 series trucks.
