Noob question - water pump install

Hey all, this is a newbie question. Since I've always been an air-cooled VW guy, I know jack about water pumpers. Forum search didn't help.

Anyway, I'm about to install my new Toyota Water pump into my 2L-TE, with a new paper gasket. Question: do I need to add some kind of gasket sealer to both sides of the gasket? If so, what kind do you suggest?

no you do not have to but i usually add a thin layer of silicone to one side just to be safe.
 
also try to make sure it's nice and relatively dry in there before you seal it up... That helps alot especially with that light coat of silcone Wayne recommended :)

I did the water pump on my HJ61 just over a month ago and I used some silicone. There is a special type for water pumps/thermostats so I would use that if you can get it. The Permatex stuff for this is grey in color. I spread a very small bead (1mm or less wide) and smooth it out with my finger. As a bonus I find it helps hold the gasket in place while installing the water pump

Don't forget to use a good gasket scraper and/or razor blade to remove the old gasket. Sometimes you get lucky and it practically falls off, other times you have to scrape and scrape. Make sure not to scratch the surface while doing this.

I didn't use any sealer when I installed mine on the 3B, I figured new gasket why bother, just be sure to not over use the sealent, a little goes along way. Tourque to exact figures and I always like to clean mating surfaces with acetone or isopropnol

I clean the surfaces well and then use "Aircraft gasket sealer". Crappy Tire and just about everyone has that. You can use silicone too but sometimes it can be tough to disassemble and there is a temptation to use too much which could gum up stuff inside.
 
When I did the pump and gasket on my BJ60 many years ago, I didn't use silicone and it leaked afterward. I took it off, re-cleaned the surfaces, used silicone and it never leaked again. Now who knows if it was a poor job on my part when I originally cleaned the gasket off or not. But since then I've always used the tiniest bead of silicone on both sides and spread it out with my finger first.

LOL as an aircraft techy I have never used that stuff.....strange tho its in all the stores advertised as such. But I do not know of the application for it.

I have used it on cars tho.Almost identical to the black gasket stuff. In my fading memory..............:rolleyes:

I have no doubt that it's not used on aircraft but it's tough to clean off your hands so if it sticks to gaskets like that then the gaskets can't possibly leak :)
 
yes it awful on the hands.

It maybe used on Aircraft. I just have not seen it. I have not seen all there is to see in this field for sure.

To be honest the only reason that I know that makes it better is that it fills in any imperfections in the surface better anbd more importantly it is easier to split the water pump away next time if there is a next time, it doesn't go hard in the same way as a gasket with sealer and stick like the proverbial brown stuff. Also it is easier to clean off.

However you do need to be carefull when assembling the pump onto the block that you don't damage the sealant surface assembling them or it will leak. Also smooth it out so that there is only a thin layer so that it doesn't squeeze out too much and get stuck in the pump.
 
Thanks all for the advice. I do have one other question though for someone with 2L-Tx experience: It almost looks like some of the bolts go through to the water jackets. Should I be putting some kind of sealer on the threads? Or am I worrying about this too much? The pump is already on - I used the gasket with sealant - but i thought I'd ask since some of the bolts showed a bit of surface corrosion which I thought might be from sticking through into a water jacket.
