gents,
i am planning in doing a compression test and an engine clean. and usually i put together a little cheat sheet just so i have everything i need when i am out in the street doing this (and also so i can make sure i know what i am doing).
anyone mind helping me with a bit of a step by step on how to do these two operations most efficiently?

compression test is have notepaper handy and pull ALL of the spark plug boots and stick a spark plug socket with the rubber inside down into the hole and get ALL the plugs out? label the plugs by cylinder for future reference? then screw in the tester in the one furthest to the front? zero out the tester? then crank the key in the engine for a count to four one thousandth or something? then pull the tester and drop about a teaspoon full of oil in one of these syringes, put it into the cylinder and replace the tester and try it again?
note readings then move on to the other cylinders?

anyone got tips on that or the proper method for doing something like this delco engine clean? it seems to say to start the vehicle and let it idle, remove the air cleaner, then squirt it into the choke assembly i guess? and keep it idling and restart if it dies? then hook up the air cleaner again and take it out and thrash it a bit? then do an oil change and fresh oil?

it mentions some being about what to do if there is an “AIR system”. and also i thought someone was telling me just to squirt it down through the spark plug holes?

THANKS for helping me wrap my head around this.

I wouldn't do any of that. If it runs good, and you want to clean the internals, just run some Delo400 at regular intervals and over time it will clean everything up. On these 80's I have never seen a reason to use any sort of "cleaners" or "additives".

Lucas Oil Gas additive

3 oz per 10 gallons.
I have tested this stuff and it actually works. I gain about 1.5MPG with it.
That can of ACDELCO stuff in your picture is for carburated engines.... the 1FZ-FE is not a carberated angine.

hey man. thanks. can’t you run the AC delco in the combustion chambers to try to free up stick rings for instance?

Other than a normal looking engine bay that has a tractor engine, what issues are you having with the rig?

I don't see any witness to any oil leaks, isn't that an indication of an issue with these things?

oil consumption.
i was going to do the compression test to see what values i get, try then top end clean in case rungs were stuck.
then continue making plans to get staged for head gasket and sending the block off to the machine shop.
it’s taken me some time to get my head around it all.

Fair enough. Try heavier oil yet?

oil consumption for me was the valve stem seals. I chose to pull everything out. Big mistake and a rabbit hole I’m not encouraging you to do.

head to a machine shop to fix the seals is all I really needed. I did way more.

you are saying you did head gasket and pulled the engine out and then ran the block to the machine shop?
and you regret pulling the engine?
THANKS

Pulled engine, transmission, and transfer case as one unit. Sent head off to be worked and new valve stem seals. Dismantled engine down to single components, cataloged and put engine back together with new gaskets and learned how to use a torque wrench.

moral of my story: only do what’s necessary and not what my MUD ocd maintenance brain told me was necessary.

How much oil are you burning, and are you sure you’re not leaking anywhere? If it’s running good I’d run it unless you’re dying to pull the head.

so you followed the otramm videos basically?
but also pulled your transmission and transfer case along with the engine? because it was easier to pull it all as one unit or something?

Pre Ryan. Just a desire to really learn a lot. FSM and my favorite parts guru who has since retired. Yup on one big piece to remove and stab back in. Not saying it was easy but I sure learned a lot.

so any advice on pulling the head with the engine in as opposed to out? or even buying a used engine and refurbing that and putting that it?!

also on engine cleaner i can put it in here?

<edit: my bad. the PCV valve is on the right. it would go i to the hose to travel to the stub on the air intake for this kind of engine cleaner>

Head can be removed in the vehicle. Bringing up on old video but @IdahoDoug produced a dvd many years ago showing how to take the head out without removing a bunch of stuff. The fsm also has step-by-step step actions but it has you removing a bunch of stuff first.

Sorry sir, I have not used a miracle in a can. I wouldn’t even begin to know where the fogger goes. I have heard of people using SeaFoam in the gas tank and used directly in the intake.

1 quart of oil for 1000 miles is acceptable for the 1fzfe. Mine was much lower than that.

oops. here is the PCV valve. i guess for engine clean product like this (i like the ones you put into the fuel) they go into the PCV valve when you hold it upside down with a funnel at the top or something?

thanks man. i know how to use a torque wrench (and really much, much better than good generally) but i’ve had a bit of a challenge wrapping my head around an auto engine like this. fortunately i got a LOT of help.
so in your case it was a combination of spark plug tube seals and valve seats i guess?
