i want to remove that huge air filter box and put a k&n filter just attached to the inlet hose. Went thru all the filters in the back of the local and nothing fits. Can't search K&N site for sizes. Saw this on a green rig in Vancouver. Does anyone have a part #:)

Taking air from the engine compartment is a bad idea! The air cleaner housing is designed to get cool air for the engine instead of the hot air under the hood.
Cool air means more air which means more power.

good point

all i would be doing is moving the air intake to over by the master cylinder which would still pull in air the same as the stock setup just on the other side. the stock air still comes in under the hood.

I guess you have your reasons but the Toyota system is hard to beat if judged allround.
The KN have been shown to let more dirt in. Tests show there is a correlation between airflow and filtering abilty.

I can't say how a BJ40/42 is stock but the BJ60 pulls air from behind the passenger headlight area NOT under the hood.
If your air cleaner housing is pulling air from under the hood chances are it's missing parts already.

the stock BJ42 air cleaner has plastic piping to just behind the headlight...
i wouldn't wish a K&N on my worst enemy...well yah i would...if you don't liek you engine then run K&N...
do a search here for more info on K&N.

As the guys have mentioned...I wouldn't run a K&N filter setup if I didn't absolutely have to. Lets in too many fine particles, and if you do any amount of gravel travel in dry dusty conditions, then it may be interesting for you to take apart your intake pipe and see how the inside looks.

Are you guys talking about the replacement K&N, cause I have a K&N filter in my stock air box, linked to a snorkle, with tonnes of dusty wheeling done, and have never had a problem. the intake hose has always been clean. The filter on the other hand is pretty dirty all the time, especially if I don't turn the snorkle head around on those dusty trips, maybe I don't clean it often enough, and the dirt actually helps clean the air.
Cheers,
Deny

HOnestly I run my K&N filter only in winter .. not sand of dirty roads .. it's simple my reazon ..

I more easy trash one OEM filter than clean the K&N filter .. and I agree with other and recognice K&N aren't the best filter in fine dusty conditions ..

I. A lot of the Aussies swear by them in very dusty conditions
:

Lots of aussies would disagree.
If you run prefilters to make up for the lack of filtration with the KN,it means you lose the extra air flow and your back where you started.

K&N are designed for the race track where filtration is not such an issue.
Race engines are reguarly stripped down and rebuilt so who cares if it gets a little dirt inside.
Landcruiser diesels and gassers are expected to do half a million klms and they need good filtration and the toyota box has been tested in the most hostile parts of the world to perform.

When I ripped my old 3F out and sold the parts I could have sold the airfilter box and tube 5 times over to owners trying to get their cruiser back to stock.

Well thanks for the responses

K&n is supposed to "increase horsepower and mileage" Not looking for the mileage just thought if i could get a little extra horse/torque for $55 bucks why not. The exhaust side is good:) no turbo allowed till next year:frown: no one i know of sells biggerer injectors. So i am stuck looking at airflow in only? I am sorry but i will not put in a small block and the propane injection has blown a few 6.0 litres i know of soooo. Dunno. This is alberta and it can be Dusty so:doh:

I doubt that you'd even be able to notice any power increase with a K&N and certainly not if you're taking air from under the hood instead of from the front stock location.

Now a turbo.....

You can add 1/8 more diesel in your pump and propane inyection to gain some HP not much .. but few ones ..

I run a K&N filter as well. I am very happy with the increased airflow compared to the OEM. A lot of the Aussies swear by them in very dusty conditions but they also have prefilters box on their Safaris or a prefilter on their snorkle. Now Wayne has me thinking. :frown:

I think most Aussies that hear of someone running a K&N Filter on a cruiser or patrol think he is a dill. The only ones that seem to do it are inexperienced first timers apart from some comp trucks. K&N and bulldust is not a good combination and when you are in those conditions the cleaner needs doing every day.;) For the overseas blokes bulldust is the fine dust on the unsealed roads and tracks in the west that can be inches deep in potholes etc and gets into everything. It is as fine as talcum powder.Unless a K&N is set up in a proper CAI there would be no noticeable difference let alone be able to feel it especially in a diesel running at 2,400 RPM.

Thanks skoki

Thanks skoki

Bearspaw to sundre nice country.

Well that was good enuff fer me i will leave in the stock.
No filter is perfect but no sense doing more damage.
Now i just have to figure how to rig an intercooler to that beer fridge of an air box:)
