the attic is vented but it's south Fla. There's room up there for it, just have to extend the copper and maybe redo some ductwork. I was just trying to avoid all that work and the heat stress on the unit by applying some kind of sound proof material to either the closet or the unit.

Insulate the walls. Look for a different type of grate or filter brand. Try a cheap fiberglass filter and see if it's due to the pleated filters. Heat is not a concern. I wouldn't wrap the unit. You could try dynamat on the air handler.

I'm betting that a change in fan speed with fix most of the problem.

All I'd be wrapping on the handler is the coild and midsection, the fan is on top and extends into the attic space. So you're saying I could dynamat the lower part and be ok? I will call him about the fan speed.

The air "sucking like a hurricane" sound happens with my central a/c air handler when I have a brand new fresh pleated filter installed. Give it a week or two to get clogged up a bit. That'll slow the air down and keep things a bit more quiet.

Wood stove, eliminated the 747 in our hallway. And the plus; you spend all your fishing time cutting and hauling firewood.

ok so my boy made it back over, the system was overcharged causing a hammer effect and he also put isolators under the handler itself so it's a lot better now. He's coming back over to open up the pleunm or whatever it's called and that should quiet down the sucking sound.
