So I finally did the deed and ditched my red coolant. I'm all about the Prestone Green now. I've read enough threads about coolant to last a lifetime and what it came down to for me was green coolant can be found pretty much anywhere on the planet and Robbie seems fond of green and made a lot of good points for it, most of which I can't remember, I just filed it away in my noggin that Robbie prefers green. Nuff said.
GeoRoss rolled over and spent the morning in my driveway, in the rain, doing a wet job. I picked a bad day to do it but it's done.
Flushed it, flushed it and then backflushed it...oh then flushed it some more. Replaced all rad hoses and tstat. Forced water thru the tstat hole, drained block, ran water thru the block while running the motor, ran all heaters again and again. It was all running clear long before we gave up flushing. Filled it with about 6qts Prestone and 9qts distilled agua. So thats it, I'm GREEN. Thats all I got!

Thanks Ross

Green or all-purpose? I can't find the Prestone green anymore, just the new stuff that 'mixes with anything'.

"New formula" is what they call it. It's still green and I wouldn't try mixing it no matter what the label says. Thats the stuff I found.

The stuff I find proudly proclaims it mixes with anything all over the front of the bottle, there's no mistaking it. I was trying to find the 'new formula' green but the stores in my area don't carry it anymore. For all I know it's the same formula, slightly browner color but not orange. I gave up and used it in the 4Runner.

This swap has passed through my mind several times. If i ever have a need to drain the coolant again i may go ahead and swap to green too.

I was told by the guy at the shop that I go to that green was easier than red to spot rust on. :D

WHy green over red?
I thought we went through this some time ago and found TOY RED was the way to go???
WHat's wrong with Toy Red?

I thought the consensus was either was fine, just don't mix them. Unless you're incredibly anal, of course.

Hold the horses. The new Prestone is not the formulation that has been around for years. Appears that Prestone is no longer making the old formulation.

If you want to use the old standby silcate based formulation, then try Peak. That is what I used for a recent flush.

Or the Texaco green silicate....

No problem Alvin,

The funny thing is that you scheduled the wettest PM on the coldest and wettest winter day in S. AZ, rain and 40F. :flipoff2: My tarp and I had a great time.

You need to remind me to call home when we are running late or I am not helping you anymore :). I was pissed I didn't get to stay for one of your home brews, but I was too cold to enjoy it anyway.
