No CEL 1993 fzj80 idling with windows down. Rear hatch is closed and the exhaust is routed out back. Smells like raw gas and the smell is strong. I searched but didn’t really find anything particularly useful.

Charcoal canister would be my first guess.

Guessing the filter element is trashed inside? I replaced the rubber lines in the engine bay and used new hose clamps.
Do you get hissing when you remove the gas cap to fill up?
If so, time for VC120 swap.

I do not get hissing. Maybe 1/10 fills I get some hiss.

Did you ever figure out this issue? I have this issue.
Like it's running rich or truly "raw" gasoline? Could be several things. Only on cold start or once warm? I have a '93 and even if no CEL I can jump the diagnostic port and it'll give me a code. Frustrating, but that's life.
