This is definetly a newby question and I am far from mechanically inclined so please bear with me I am trying to learn.

I changed my oil yesterday for the first time on my 88 BJ74 and noticed that the dipsitck has a cool section at the bottom and further up a hot section. When the engine is cold though the oil level is way up on the dipstick almost to the hot line. When I check the oil immediatly after shutting of the engine though the oil level is right at the top of the hot line on the dipstick. I figure that as long the oil level when it warm is at the top I am ok. I just want to be sure I am not doing anything incorrect and any comments would be great. I read that some BJ74's have a full and an add line, mine does not. Do I not have the original dipstick?

ps I searched about this and couldn't find anything.

What colour is the grab handle on the dipstick your checking? And, what colour is the fluid on the stick?

There was no colour on the dipstick and it had a clip that you push back when you pull the dipstick out, it is on the passenger side of the vehicle close to the cab. Where is the oil dipstick located then???

 I just checked and found the oil dipstick, I told you guys I was a newby but that is pretty bad.

Sorry. Thanks for the replies though.

Everyone is new sometime and the only stupid question is one that is not asked.

I would recommend the purchase of a workshop manual or download it so you can familiarise yourself with the truck. Best to read up on the project before attempting it. Anyway we are at the right place to ask questions. cheers
