Hi I just sent some yen to Japan for a comfy cruiser......... now i wait.......... brother in law's waiting for 2 lexus luxury cars, they told him no roll on ro ro till 2007..........and i wait..............too cheap for a container.

Anyway, cool site, I'm used to suzukis so this is different, specially with the 80 series, mods seem much more focused on epedition type wheelin that rock crawlin. I bought this to tow my suzuki and for camping with family, i'm gonna try hard not to break it wheelin. I read through the FAQ, but forgive me if I've missed something and ask a repetitive question, but here goes.

- any pics of hardcore 80 series? exos? 38" plus tire sizes? Any t-case doublers available?

- recommended shops in or near Vancouver B.C Kanata?

-any body have to put the high brake light in to pass inspection? Side marker lights? switch headlights?

Not really tech related, but anyone know how to get smoke smell out of upholstery, pretty sure mines a chain smokers ride, i heard baking soda works well?

- I found the part numbers in the FAQ, can you order these from Toyota? Is it stock (ex. oil filters) or do they bring it in? If so how long?

Cheers:beer:

Hi and welcome. I suppose the 80series is the pretty well the ulimate long distance expedition rig alongside the 75 series troopy and they cost heaps so rock crawling with an 8o is a kind of luxury to most.

Those japanese smokers must fill the whole car up with smoke and drive around with the windows up.
I would give the whole interior a scrub and keep the windows down.
Most of the problem is having the windows shut for a long time .
Also clean out the aircon filter in the blower box.

These are a couple of my favorite hardcore 80s:D I think Toyota should have built them this way;)

38" tires are pretty uncommon unless you get into extensive mods. Most here haven't done that. You can search on this but that's the executive summary.

Recommended shops? Ciaran Wilson or Ateb in Burnaby. Search and you shall find.

Mine got through inspection without any changes but I think lately you have to at least do the headlights. It seems to depend, though.

For smell, ozone works really well. Most detail shops can do this for you.

Parts are available, but it sometimes takes some work. Ateb can just about anything you need at pretty low markups. G&S may be able to help with some used parts.

38" in a 80 series .. mmmm

1. 6" Slee Kit
2. 2" Body or some minors cuts in your fender flares.
3. 5.29 gears .. :D

2. 2" Body or some minors cuts in your fender flares.

Is there fender to cut in these things? I looked at one at Japan auto in Abbotsford briefly and it didn't seem that there was much to cut. It seems up travel has been an issue in all the rigs I've seen while searching.
What's the general concencus (spelling?) on largest tire for the weight of these trucks with stock axles?
Are oil filters available at the dealership?
Thanks

Search in the 8o section. This section is all about the engine. Your rig shares lots with the USA 80. SO go check that section out.

Welcome to the diesel section.....of Mud!

The VX Ltd at Abbotsford Japan Auto is a nice truck. I looked at it today for fun. 146K but no lockers and the guy has not yet set a price. It looks basically totally stock. It's even the same colour as mine which is rare.

Of course really big tires can be run but it's going to cost you quite a bit to do it.

I pressured him for a approx price to satisfy my curiousity and he said approx 30. k.

146,000 km, no lockers and $30,000, now that is fawking funny.

sometimes...
Some of the parts people at Victoria Metro Toyota walk away when they hear JDM; but one woman there was very nice and did order some filters for me. I've also used the Baldwins from Coast Industrial but now I order from cruiserdan.

Are you serious? 30K for that truck? That is way too high for that truck. If you are even thinking about paying that, take a look at one of Wayne's vehicles. The one at AbbyJapan auto looks nearly bone stock and in good but not amazing shape. 30K is out of line for that specimen. For one of Wayne's, it's not out of line. I paid more than 10 grand LESS than that for a truck with significantly lower k's. And mine is in better shape overall than that one.

Thanks anyway but I've bought one, I'm just "waiting for my ship to come in". I decided to take the gamble and import myself.

:flamingo: What the hell is the flamingo icon for anyway? Oh wait a minute I get it. If I have to wait 6 months for my truck that will be :flamingo: !

Well I wish you luck, but most importantly, faith and nerve!

On November 9th it will have reached 5 months for me, 3 months of it waiting at the port in a bonded yard to catch a boat because of its manufacture date (September 1991 model). Took less than about 10 days to get here but everything once arrived in Canada has been extremely slow: one week waiting to be taken off the boat and passed though customs, almost three weeks to cross Canada on the train, another week for it to be taken off the train in Montreal (don't expect anything to get done during weekends!) and more wait to get inspections done, registration documents created from scratch...

At least you're right at the door of the Orient, should eliminate a lot of costs and delays. I hired an importer to deal with all the paperwork, glad I did, because I would never want to handle it for $1,000, I'd simply go nuts with the aggravation... Have you found a bonded translator for the Japanese paperwork?

Anyway, best of luck. It's not for no reason that these trucks are so expensive once all prepped up when you can look at it, test drive it and simply drive away with it. You do get a lot of value for the money from the guys who do this for you! On the other hand, you will save some money doing it yourself if everything goes perfectly well, and you will learn a lot. I myself would rather learn about the technical stuff than learn how to navigate the nasty, senseless and wasteful regulatory maze.

Wow that sounds complicated, my brother in law has imported numerous cars and has not had such difficulties. I am relying heavily on his knowledge to guide me through this. This is his general guide to importing( I blanked out some names and numbers of contacts he's made so as to not have the contact worn out):

• When finding a site use Goggle earth to find out how far away it is away from a port. The farther it is the more it will cost for moving can be up to $500
• Most of the importers will not provide parts until you have purchased at least one car from them
• Use the Freight List to find out the size of a car. Then compare with shipping rates and port. Sometimes they will not have this and you will have to request this Via e-mail
o The average rate is around 80$ to 85$ USD per cubic meter
• ‘NYK Line’ is a shipping company that ships to Canada

Paying for the car:

• When sending money use Yen not USD
• Send money through wire transfer from a Canadian bank using a SWIFT code will take up to 5 biz days
o The government insures the transfer and they are checking the other account to make sure it is valid
o This number will be sent to by FAX from the Japan contact
• After you paid for the car the following papers will be sent via a currier
o Invoice
 There needs to be an FOB price
• FOB: Just the value of the car not the cost of getting it on the boat
 A second invoice for the total cost of the car
o Bill of Lading
 3 copies will be sent
• One for the Dock
• One for Customs
o Cargo Insurance
o Export Certificate / Registration
 Make sure to have an English copy with this

Port information:

• The Dock will fax you an ‘Import assessment’ and a ‘CFIA’ form when the car is received
• The Dock Contact info (Annacis Terminals)
o ******* 604-***-****
o Picking up the car form will cost about $55
• After receiving the package from Japan apply for a VIN number and have it sent to ****. (If the car is good have it sent to the Docks to do the inspection there for when the car is received)
o To apply for the VIN go to the local insurance place
 If any info is needed call ***** 604-***-**** (He is with ICBC)
 Cost for the VIN $25
 Inspection cost is about $90 and installing the plate cost about $50

Customs inspections:

• Fill out the ‘CFIA form using information from the papers sent when the car was purchases (Invoice, Bill of Lading, and the Export Certificate)
o Use a Master card for Method of Payment ($46)
o Fax the CFIA form to CBSA
 Phone 1-604-713-9800
 FAX 1-604-713-9844
o They will send back
 Cover sheet (With Contact Info)
 A Stamped CFIA form
• An a Document from the ‘Canadian Food Inspection Agency’
o K21 Document may not say on the form

Customs / Duty and surcharges:

• Make an appointment with ‘Transport Canada customs agency’ as soon as the CFIA form has been filled and sent out
o 1-604-666-0547
 Bring Everything!
 Everything needs to be paid for and stamped before the car can be picked up.
• You will receive a yellow Transport Canada form
• You will have to pay Taxes/duty and will receive a ‘casual goods accounting document’ form
o $100 Fee for A/C surcharge
o $100 Fee for 4 wheel drive
o 6.1% duty
o GST on the purchase price total 7%
• Bring everything back to the first person and they will stamp the yellow form
• The day you go down to Customs pick up a day permit (This can be bought in advanced for what ever day you have to go down to get the paper work done)
o Go to the dock after filling out the paper work.
o Remember to call the dock and ensure that the car can be picked up for that day
o Cost is about $32 for a permit

And you find THAT uncomplicated? Look at the size of your list!

All the above was done except that the customs documents were lost in the mail (a rare occurence I presume) and duplicates have to be made. I guess they had to cut the trees first to make the paper and hunt the octopus to get the ink because it's been two weeks since we've asked for duplicates to be sent by courrier.

When the documents arrive we will be able to get it inspected and get the VIN number thing done prior to applying for insurance and plates.

Remember, I'm in Quebec, I have to pay transport accross the country, and I HATE paperwork. I hired a person to do that for me because I'd go nuts with all the fuss. I'd much rather work on the engine, do the oil treatment or build a biodiesel reactor. Paperwork nonsense drives me nuts because it's mostly arbitrary and based on politics, whereas technical issues deal with the real world.

In any case, thank you for posting this, it has been very informative and useful :)

Chris
