Hello,
I'm a newbie at diesels and not a mechanic. I'm considering buying a used landcruiser with a toyota 3b diesel engine. The truck is in oregon. The owner said that it would need new fuel injectors. I don't know if the guy is correct about this since I'm not a mechanic...but here is what he said: "the truck smokes when you start it cold. It smokes a a lot and has gotten worse since last winter. It DOES NOT smoke when running. I believe one of the injector nozzles is leaking into the cylinder when the eng is off. This will cause the condition I am having. It clears up very quickly and has not effected the running of the truck or MPG."

Does this sound like a reasonable assessment? and what would it cost to fix this if it was the injector? Are the parts available?

The car was his daily driver and didn't sit around much. I don't know how many total miles it has.
thanks for your time
Ben

G'day Ben

Im no mechanic either, and im sure someone will pop up and tells ya the deal..
but from my experience, i have a B engine in my BJ40 and it smokes white at start up, from what i have been lead to believe it is the rings in the valves/cylinders and oil getting into the 'cylinders' or something like that

when oil burns its white smoke, when fuel burns i think the smoke is black

what colour is the shmoke??

injectors (new nossles) are bout 100 ozzie bucks each (x4), so ball park for oregon would be similar i imagine.. its about double that for 'new' injectors

new injectors.. cheaper than fixing screwed rings

please post up what you do about it, as im interested.. cheers

Injectors do wear out. I have mine rebuilt about every 100,000 kms or so. Figure about $50 per injector to rebuild them and any decent diesel injection shop should be able to do it. DO NOT have the injectors done at the local mechanic, they will simply farm them out to a diesel shop anyways.

Smoky starts can also be dead glow plugs. The truck will start with some glow plugs being bad but the more bad plugs you have the harder the starting and the more smoking you will have.

Thanks for the replies. I'll let you know what happens if I decide to pursue it further.

Iain ,its actually blue smoke when you burn oil, think 2 stroke;)

White smoke is from combustion that is too cool or it can be coolant leaking into the combustion chamber

Black smoke is from injector dribble or over fuelling

Grey smoke is usually bad glow plugs or a combo of white and black smoke and the problems that cause them

Thanks for the replies.

Can anyone point me to online sources for parts for the 3b diesel?

thanks
Ben
