Hello,
I'm a newbie and not a mechanic. I'm considering buying a used landcruiser with a toyota 3b diesel engine. The truck is in oregon. The owner said that it would need new fuel injectors.
I'm concerned about being able to get parts for this engine and also finding a mechanic in the SF bay area that can work on it.
Anyone familiar with this engine? any red flags or things I should check for?
any advice on this would be appreciated including mechanics and sources for parts.
thanks!
Ben

What makes the owner think it needs new injectors??

I don't know if the guy is correct about this since I'm not a mechanic...but here is what the owner said

"the truck smokes when you start it cold. It smokes a a lot and has
gotten worse since last winter. It DOES NOT smoke when running. I believe one of the injector nozzles is leaking into the cylinder when the eng is off. This will cause the condition I am having. It clears up very quickly and has not effected the running of the truck or MPG."

does this sound like a reasonable assessment? and what would it cost to fix this if it was the injector? Are the parts available?

thanks again
Ben

diesel section has better advice regarding the 3B, which in my opinion is a very nice engine. injectors can be rebuilt, could also be the governor diaphram if it has a high idle and smokes a bit while running. 3B's will last a long time but you need to keep up on maintenace. how many km's. was it sitting for a while, and please post in diesel section.

I'll post in the diesel section--thanks.
I'm not sure how many kms total...a lot. The truck was a daily driver and reportedly very reliable and hadn't sat around much at all.
thanks

if the smoke is white its injectors 200-300 and its done every 100 000km roughly 60 000 miles i think
the govener diaphragm will blow black when its on its way out

if the smoke is blue 3000 to 5000 for a rebuild
and get a compression test before buying 300+ psi and you should be good any lower = rebuild sooner
x4 on post in diesel section
