Hi,
I' m Jose from Germany and I'm travelling with my 1985 BJ 75 through central- and southamerica. The toyo is very special (for me:-), it has a pop-up-roof, inside 2 watertanks, compressorfridge, waterpumps, meubles, 3 beds, 2 diesel-tanks for 230 l diesel and many more. But thats the reason why the car is soooo heavy, 3.3-3.5 tons!!! And it has only the good old 3 b engine with the H 55 F.
The car has a 24 volt-system and I'm using 4 batteries, 2 for the motor and 2 for the fridge, pumps etc. with solarpanels. My 3 b has a bit more than 250000 km.

Since a few months I m looking for a new engine. I wanted a 1 hz but in Nicaragua they had only 2 h or 14 b but I think they are not so much stronger.
Here in Costa Rica it's very dificult to get an 1 hz or even 1 hdt and very expensive.
I could put a turbo on it. A guy in Panama offered my a overhauled Turbo with a kkk turbocharger.

Or maybe it's better to look for a 13 bt, 14 bt or a 15 b.

The cars here have normaly only 12 volt systems. So I have to use my alternator and starter with 24 v.

Now the questions.
Which engine-solution is the best in my case with less problems for the installation and in the high mountains in the andes 4000 m!!! in the future?

Does anybody know if the 13, 14, 15 b motors a common in southamerica, thats the next destination? For spares and repairs it's important.

Another question,
normaly i break with the engine when Im driving downhill, but the car is so heavy that it's always pushing and I'm getting faster and faster and have to use the breaks (too much sometimes).
Is the motorbreak better with a bigger engine, 1hz or 1hdt, 6 cylinder and more cc? It's also important, because it's safer.

Thank you

saludos Jose

hi jose, the normal engine for your toy is the 1hz, but as you said in the andes gonna be lazzy, better a 1hd-t.

but if you look for a 1hz you can look in a minibus from toyota call "coaster", so maybe is esay.

in panama is a good guy who know all about toyotas is david tapage, he is this forum too, an i´m sure that soon he gona put a reply.

when you get to IQUIQUE (Northern Chile) you can find all sorts of Diesel engines, they come in container loads from Japan, there plenty of shops where to install it.
if your bj75 makes it to southern chile, stop by pumalin park, i'll show you around.

Hello Jose, when you came to Santiago (Chile), contact Tepui or me and we show you good 4x4 rides near Santiago.

adding a turbo to your truck, will your engine crap out faster and will parts wear out faster?

Not if the boost levels are kept conservative.

I second the turbo to your 3B idea. But if you can get a 13b-t with low KMs that is also a good choice. Bolts right in :)

If you look in the diesel section they are talking about exhaust brakes. Sounds like you need one of those.

please go read that section. https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=147599

Hi dude ..

As I said to hou get a 1HD-T engine are not easy here .. but turbo it's your deal keeping in mind altutude and power ...

Fiting a turbo to your 3B actually maybe it's a option .. cheap and easy ..

Hi guys,
thanks for the answers. today spoke with a guy who has a 1hz engine for 5000 $, not very cheap. as well spoke with some guys from a turbo-repair and -selling-shop, an these guys told me, that they have no turbos for my 3b, but they are selling garret turbos. as wll he told me for installing a turbo you have to open the engine and replace the rings and pistons etc. And I dont think thats totally true but I am not a specialist for turbos. do I have change the exhaust system and the manifold as well? Or can i put a turbo in my 3 b without any changes?

thanks

Jose

At your KMs 250,000 or so. The engine needs no internal parts done.

You can install it with a manifold and use it right away.

I think you should order a turbo kit from AXT or Turboglide, Denco. Have it sent to an address in Chile and then install it. Shoulds like the guys your talking with are not enough informed.

Turbo kit is around 3000 usd.

So the 1hz isn't too bad. But the 1hz will still be weak at high altitudes. No turbo on a 1hz.

HI,
here in Panama a guy offered me a 1hdt.

I think I will need a new bellhousing and pilotaxle.

Anything else that i need to change. what about the glowsystem? Can i use my 24volt alternator and starter without problems?

what about the injectionjets, in Germany they problably change them every 100.000 km?

Maybe it will be a good idea because i know nothing about the km of these engine.

thanks
Jose

Jose-

The alternator system won't work from 3B to 1HD-T.
Alternators for 3B have combo vacuum pump and HD-T alternators use twin belts. A 24V alternator would be the best choice.

Starter motors will work, but the gear head of the starter that spins the flywheel must be either 1HZ or 1HDT style.

As has been noted many times before, to bolt the cast iron toyota five speed to a 1HD-T you must use a 1HZ bellhousing and 1HZ input transmission. a 1HZ clutch and flywheel (275mm) or 1HD-T flywheel (300mm) will be needed. If you choose the 300mm system, an Isuzu clutch disk will be needed. The 1985 3B cannot be easily made to mate to the clutch system, the transmission input shaft is too long.

Turbo the 3B until you have more time for the conversion.

I have the turbo

Hi guys,
like i wrote in the "24 volt, diesel" forum.

Right now I have a new Garrett T3 turbo in my car. I had only the time for driving apr. 200 km but at this time i am very satisfied. Feels like i have a new car, the first time that i can climb a "steep" hill in the 2nd or even the 3rd gear!!!!!

I had the choice tu put a 15 b or the turbo. But the 15 b is a unknown engine and my 3 b always worked very well...

Right now the car is in a container and will be shipped to colombia the next days and there I will see what the turbo can do in the high mountains - up to 4000 m altitude.

And then I will change, if its possible, mi ring and pinion for 4.56 - now i have 4.11.

I will tell more when i have more infos.

cheers Jose
