I have a hj60 with the 2H. Sometimes when I cold start it (glow it twice and then fire it up) it will run for a few seconds and then shut itself off. Then I fire it back up again, and it runs perfect.

Why does it turn itself off? (Oil prerssure??)

Thanks dudes.

What the?

C'mon? Nobody has any ideas?:frown:

More Info

I get in, and glow the engine twice (it has the auto timer on the glow plugs). I fire up the engine and it runs a little rough (standard cold start nothing crazy rough) and then I hear a click noise (like the same noise that sounds when the glowplug light comes off) and the engine shuts itself off. It runs for like 5 seconds.

Then I turn it over again, and it fires up, and runs fine. (Still a little rough until it warms up)

I guess I am wondering if it is an auto shut-off, or is something not working, and why does it shuts off. Is there a sensor that detects something and then shuts the engine off?

Thanks Guys!

Did it come on overnight or slowly get worse? Maybe the plugs need changing with the northern winter getting colder

I would get someone else to start it while you watch the EDIC lever.
It should switch to its drive position when its starts
The oil pressure switch test in the FSM says there should be "continuity with the engine stopped between terminal and ground and none with engine running

I'm no expert but it sounds like two seperate issues to me. The rough start and rough idle sounds like glow plugs, low compression, injectors, edic not overfueling. The shutdown after a few seconds is probably the low oil pressure shut off. My 2h takes a little while to build pressure, usually two tries. Once up I'm golden.

Sweet

When I say "rough" its not anything bad or broken that needs to be addressed, its simply a cold engine, and is not purrrring. Then when I pull the choke nob a bit a kick the idle up, its fine.

So just to clarify, the engine knows what the critical oil pressure is, and if that is not being met then it shuts itself off????

This only happens once every 5 - 10 cold starts (like -15 to -10 Celsius)

Thanks guys.

Short answer is Yes, the engine has a low pressure shut off. If the oil pressure drops below 2-3???psi then the engine shuts itself off. In the case of starting, it often takes longer for the engine to build up oil pressure than it takes to to trigger the low pressure shut off. At first I wasn't sure if it was just the pressure switch that was going bad, but when I put a mechanical gauge on, it also took a while to read any pressure.
