New here, I just bought a 1996 TLC (119,000 miles - $5500 (deal?)) with leather power seats. The vehicle is cool, it has some minor cosmetic stuff wrong - such as: the dreaded delaminated wood grain, emblem loose on rear, drivers side seat has some leather wear at the point of entry.

Last but not least, the front, passenger side seat no longer moves forwards or backwards. After inspection, only one of the power screws is turning, the screw closest to the center of the vehicle is not turning at all. This obviously causes the seat to get itself into a bind.

After taking the four bolts off and tilting the seat back (did not unplug) to get a better look, I noticed a white platic threaded component (on side closeset to cente of vehicle) which threaded into another white plastic component where the metal gear stabs into was loose and when i tried to move the seat it popped out. This what plastic piece (with phillips head to screw it in) had very small threads which were stripped.

It appears that both of these white plastic components will need to be changed. I called the local dealer and and he told me this is a non serviceable part and the whole track would need to be purchased. I know this is bullsh!t.

Does anyone know the part number to both of these pieces for a '96?

Also, I did a search and found a '94 LC that had run into this:

The part number is 72206 a gearbox that contains the gear you need they are around $65 each.

My Question:
Is this the same part number for a '96? Does this include both plastic pieces? Who can I order this from.

Take the side that is not moving apart. Grip the raised rings on the drive screws with vice grips before removing and re-installing the end nuts or you'll have more gears to replace.

My Question:
Why is he clamping with vice grips ? Is this done to rotate the shaft? I Want to understand what is trying to be accomplished.

Text from Thread :
Remove the gearbox in the front and either replace the whole gearbox if is the inside track or replace just the gear from the gearbox you just bought if it's the outside track.
Make sure the two tracks are aligned fore aft before replacing the seat or you'll be buying more gears.

Thanks for any advice...

Or, you could try to fasten the cap in snugly without using the stripped threads - maybe drill a small thru hole and pin it. It seems like someone on here has done that...

I believe the part is identical for all years.

First it is much easier if you remove the entire seat to work on it.

The long treaded bar has a thick washer on it for you to hold when you undo the nut on the end of the bar to remove it. This shaft is driven by the gear you are replacing and if the bar is not held when you retighten the nut on the end after replacing the gear, the gear will turn against a fixed gear threaded metal bar - plastic loses to metal in this case.

Thanks for any advice...[/QUOTE]
