Can the rear drums be adjusted from the back or do you have to take the wheel off? I need to trying tighten up the rear pads a bit.

Also, what kind of tool is needed, can it be done with a screw driver?

is this on the 1980? is your ebrake on the axle or transfer case?

if ebrake is on axle, there is one adjuster per wheel
if ebrake is on transfer case there will be 2 adjusters per wheel

that is as long as they are not stuck/frozen or rusted.

Yes. Adjust your brakes with the wheel on. A screwdriver will work for the rears.

Yes they can...look on the inside @ the dust plate..there should be an oval hole where you can adjust through...

1- going to look for those holes in the dust plate now.

2-just replaced my e-brake pads/shoes and it's on the back of the t-case.

3-good to know no special tools required at this point.

Thank you all for the help.

Adjust both location on each wheel the same. ie: if you turn the top one click turn the bottom one click as well.

Paul, if the e-brake is on the axle wouldn't the rears be self adjusting like on the '60 series?

There is no such thing as ‘self-adjusting’ drum brakes on the rear axle of a 08/80 and later 40/60 series Land Cruiser.

The only way that the rear brakes will adjust is if you get under the truck and manipulate the adjusting wheel with an adjusting tool, OR, if your parking brake functions properly, and you use it regularly.

Using the parking brake regularly on the '60 just to avoid having the bellcrank seize is good practice anyways! I'd be happy with an axle like that for the '55 or '45LV. It's "automatic" enough for me.

what poser said.
