Hi, i live in California, and in my travels abroad everywhere I go I see toyotas like the ones we have here, only diesel. Which I might add when I first saw that I was so utterly stoked that you can't even imagine.

I know nothing about toyota diesels but I'm not new to diesels. I've been driving and custom tuning diesels pick ups here in California for several years and understand the basics.
Anyways, enough with the background, my friend is looking at importing a landcruiser from Canada (Not a specific one yet, He's just starting the process). So I figured I'd try to round up all the info I could on these motors.
Am I right in Assuming that in is an 8 cyclinder international harvester engine, or does the IH8 mean something different?

In a late 80's early 90's cruiser like an Fj70 what are the motor specifics? Is it Mechanical or Electronic injection? direct injection or IDI? Inline or Rotary style injection pump? Turbocharged/NA Intercooled/non-intercooled?

I could figure all this out by looking at one when he gets it, but Thought it might be better to gather some info in advance.

thanks a bunch,
Sean

welcome!
You will get a wealth of information by using the search function on this board/site.
No Toyota V8 Diesel has made it to Canada yet...
the ones you can easily import are the 3B and 2H engines (4 and 6 cyl). or you can buy a newer engine up there (1HZ, 1HdT), and import it and install it.

go to www.sor.com and serch for "motor"
they've got some specs on the stock motors there.

Welcome to IH8MUD

IH8 stands for I Hate, you can figure out the rest.

The search function is your best friend here.... LOTS of info covered many times.

Hang around and read, read, read..... then post. post, post....

FJ70 would be a carborated 6 cyl gasser.
FZJ70, Fuel injected gasser,
BJ70 Normally Aspirated, indirect injected (Rotary or inline pump depending on market), 3.4l I4 diesel,
BJ71 Turboed, Direct Injected, 3.4l I4 diesel ( inline pump).
HJ70 (probably didn't exist but the pickup version did) NA IDI I6 diesel (Inline). HZJ70 NA IDI OHC I6 diesel (rotary).
HDJ70 or 71 perhaps Turboed DI OHC I6 diesel(electronic rotary).

None are factory intercooled.

Production ran from 1984 to present.

Hey Sean. Definitely search the forum for "Import" or sim. I'm a newbie but I learned a lot from the posts. You should also check out the US Gov's import restrictions. The way I understand it, importing a Canadian market diesel is pretty easy. However, importing the sweet Japanese imports (RHD) is pretty damn hard. :crybaby:

Good luck, and keep us posted.

the importation was pretty easy in az. i got my bj40 delivered from japan to my front door in about a month. use a well known importer and it shouldn't be a problem. read the sticky at the top on importing i learned alot. welcome to the club:flipoff2:

I imported an 1980 bj41 a few months back. I was told no go by CA EPA, were CA DMV said bring it on in. CA EPA did not like the fact it was a diesel, DMV did not care as long as it was older than 25 years and met all CA safety standards, I found the DOT exemption number on line. I used an importer to get all my ducks in a row, He was up front and told me I did not really need his service, but I did not want any suprises at the boarder. The whole deal went real smooth. All that said I have heard of horror stories from others in CA trying to import.
Good luck

Oh yea mine is a RHD, again DMV did not care.

Yeah I know its not too hard, we have a 94 f250 diesel that is canadian, we brought it in because we were able to get the powerstroke engine a year before it was released on U.S. soil, and we didn't have any issues with it. What's with the older than 25 years thing though? Our truck was almost brandnew when it was brought in, so I don't get it.

i dont know about 25 years but i think anything that comes in from overseas is supposed to be 15 years or older....dont quote me on it or anything, i havnt really looked into buying a JDM so i dont know for sure, i would imagine its a bit different when comming from Can to US though

15 years or older is the import rule in Canada; I don't think it's the same in the US. 25 years old buys some exemptions in the US for safety, emissions, etc.
