just a brief update here and a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that was kind enough to drop in. particularly the help sorting the heater core and leaky radiator issue.
so far it appears that the radiator and the heater core are fine (knock wood).
from what i was able to figure - the heater control valve was busted and they did not fix it and instead capped it off. once i fixed that i there was also a coolant leak from a rotted end of a hose at the engine. this leak seemed to leave a lot of coolant on the engine which got vaporized, and this mist then migrated through the firewall and ended up in the interior of the cab. so this basically mimicked a bad heater core from everything i can figure.
the last item is that there seems to be a leak of some kind through a rubber grommet (?) at the firewall on the PS. so when i pressure washed the engine (and subsequently garden hose washed it) there would be water on the DS floorboards which was confusing. i haven't figured out where this is coming in but so far if i don't hose it down against the firewall i don't have a leak.
thought i should update in case anyone runs into similar symptoms.
took awhile but with a lot of help from MUD i was able to get it sorted.
