roscoFJ73, I think you are right regarding the tuning. If I put the accelerator more than about half way down I get black smoke.

This engine should handle the hills easily in low range if you only want to go 40kph.
I would get someone who knows diesels to adjust the pump and bench test the injectors and rebuild them if necessary.
The injectors need to open at the correct pressure and the nozzle tips need to be the right shape and be clean.
Black smoke is from overfuelling or nozzles that drip fuel rather than atomizing it.
This can also make the engine run hotter.

Its obvious your brakes need work too,but using low range going downhill will help keep your brakes cool

Ive had drag races with 3Ls in Hiluxes and they can keep up with a 1HZ until about 50kph:D
 
Thanks again. I now feel like I know what to do and will get on with it. When I couldn't fix the brake caliper myself I put a few drops of oil on the pistons and it did seem like I had more power afterwards so maybe that will work until I can get it fixed properly. I will get the engine tuned and the brakes done ASAP
