Hi, I've just got a BJ74 auto (first 4WD) and I'm looking for some advice, and possibly future advice.

I've been 4WD'ing once and it did quite alright, but struggled a tiny bit going up a long hill. I believe i used high range, but i guess im seeking clarification on what to use in certain conditions. There's other choices on the auto gearbox too. Help on that would be good.

cheers

i was wondering, if you were closer i would invite you on a run...
you can lock the tranny into a gear with the shifter which helps the power stay with out up shifting.
just find a local hill and try high range low range and different gears till you find what feels good.
the best suggestion i can give though is find a local club and go for a run with them, first hand experience is the best.
welcome to the list and congrates on the ride.
cheers M8

cheers.

if im in D, then in the really boggy stuff the gear will drop back when i least want it to.

try selecting a gear and staying in that one manually.
ie. lock it in second and give it a try...
cheers

Australia, but i have an import

Welcome and which part?

West Australia dude

So going to [2] on the gearbox means that i start in 2nd gear or it runs 2 gears?

Wecolme,

A BJ74 is beautiful truck.
You may of just bought your first and last 4wd ever.
Very good choice. :)

As crushers already suggested, try and find a local 4wd club.
You will be able to learn lots.

And since know once has asked yet, do you have any pics?
What can you tell us about it?

Once again excellent choice and welcome to the club.

Cheers,
Nick

i wish i had a camera to take a pic

basically my gearbox goes

P
R
N
D
3
2
L

yep, normal.
so try driving and shifting the tranny manually to see how the truck feels locked into one gear or another...

i guess there's 2 types of people that visit these forums, the ones that know a fair bit, and the ones that don't know much at all. Thanks for your help, and I hope that my future posts about the BJ74 arent taken as spam.
