I'm the proud new owner of an 88 fj62. I have to order a Factory Service Manual ASAP. In the meantime I want to replace some fluids. Can someone tell me the capacities of the following?

Engine Oil:
Auto Trans Fluid:
Coolant:
Front Diff:
Rear Diff:

I figure once I pick her up I better do these along with plugs & wires, Cap & Rotot and any other things recommended. Then onto the brakes.

Thanks!

Marc

I've spent/wasted tons of time because I kept changing my mind, or my plan on what I wanted to do. Spend some time reviewing build threads here. Sketch out a plan of what you want. You will get lots of great ideas. Then revisit your plan and start with a simple project or two, something that can be accomplished in no more than a few hours. If you want a reliable daily driver, you are right on track; it's gotta go and it's gotta stop so all of the things involved such as fluids, brakes and should include putting it on a lift and take a good look at the underneath of your vehicle, get a feel for what is there, what should be there, and what needs your attention!
The FAQ section and one particular great thread here is "mods for under $50" I would review both. One other point made here, one weakness for these vehicles and plague all from that era, rust. Any time you open a space that has not seen the light of day for quite a while, have several things on hand. A flashlight to look for rust and things long lost at some point, something to wipe down the area, examine the wiring for breaks and breakdown, I always close by replacing rubber spacers where wiring can break down, spray any area where the paint looks thin/absent with something as simple as rustoleum gray primer, or smear on something as good as POR15, and add sound abatement material (I purchased a large roll of rattletrap extreme but lots of options).
Or, change the fluids, check the brakes, look under the hood and carriage, clean it up and drive it! It's a great vehicle either way.
By the way, based on another post here, not a good idea to drive on old tires :steer:

Thanks....

Thanks.....I was hoping someone could tell me the amounts so I can stop and pick up fluids on the way to pick up the rig. I'm def gonna check the levels before I drive it. It would really suck driving her off and breaking something on the way home.

engine is 5-8 quarts as i recall. depending if you replace oil filter.
Don't know auto - it will also depend if they added on a cooler (more capacity).

front and rear are same oil - so get a lot and then start with one. then repeat (maybe with napa run in between if you need more).

you aren't going to break her driving home. just check, top off, and go.

Welcome :flipoff2: and good luck!

First things first... install an external transmission cooler.

Since I just helped someone out with this recently, engine oil is somewhere between seven and eight quarts with filter (sorry I can't do much better, I get oil by the five gallon bucket). Coolant required two gallons to get it roughly 50-50 (meaning you'll need at least that much water). Front diff and rear diff together took somewhere around a gallon and a half (again, got this by the gallon jug), and auto trans I have no idea. I DO know that the flush took on the order of gallons to get it to look not so screwed.

X2 on the external transmission cooler, when I helped change the fluid out on the trans, one was installed.

While you're going through the rig fluids wise, don't forget to check the birfs for grease, and don't forget the transfercase either.

Welcome, and post some pics of it when you get it home.

Welcome,Engine oil 8 quarts with filter change.I bought 2 gallons of auto trans. fluid.Grease the drive shafts and front knuckles approx.6 large tubes grease. Mike

Warning don't put grease in your difs only use it if your rebuilding the ends with the Birfs
