Picked up my new 94 today and 3 miles away got rear ended. How difficult is it to remove my rear bumper? I read that the main section isn't really a bumper, but how difficult is it to remove?

Welcome and sorry to hear about your luck. Any other body damage. Pics would great if you get a chance...

I think it is actually a reas cross member, but have never looked to see how/if it could be removed....

If no other damage, you could start off right with a rear tire carrier or at least a good aftermarket one!!

(Wishing no injury, slow rear-end impact here!!)

The rear cross member is welded in.

As stated above the actual metal part is welded to the crossmember and the frame. Cutting it with a cut-off wheel is probably the best option to avoid butchering it too much. The pastic bumperettes unbolt from it. If it is seriously bent (ie, you were hit really hard) you might want to get your truck frame inspected for damage... Im not sure how you'd go about replacing it if is was really smoked. Replace it with an aftermarket bumper that are sexier, and much more functional...

Cheers.

Post up a pic so we can see the damage. If the cross member is buggered then it becomes 'more interesting' :D If just the bumperettes, unbolt, toss in can and go.

Chuck Norris would have spat on it to straighten it out...
and then decapitated the other driver with a flying kick...

:D

sorry about bad luck, but welcome to the best LC forum

I was rear-ended by a tree last summer, so feel free to PM with questions if you have any body damage and want advice on what to watch out for while getting it fixed.

Here's hoping you just buggered up the disposeable factory bumper

Oh, and welcome. :flipoff2:

I feel your pain, literally.

Remove the bolts that hold the rear mudlaps on. Then get under the truck and you'll see how the corners caps are mounted. There are several small bolts on each corner and a couple of them are a little tough to get to, depending on whether or not you have a hitch. The outer plastic skin comes off and then the metal bracket beneath it. Once you get the first one off, the second one is a breeze. What will be left is that center piece, which as stated is actually the frame crossmember. If that's not structurally damaged you are good. If it is, then that's something to have looked at by a body shop. If you have any intentions of modifying or using this truck offroad, here is your chance to get yourself an aftermarket rear bumper. There are several brands, Kaymar is good and you can see them at www.man-a-fre.com. I'd make the guilty party pony up about $1200 and go bumper shopping and forever trash the OEM bumper setup. Good luck, hope you are okay.

I don't think a 95 year old should be driving. That probably contributed to the accident. Get off the road before you kill someone!!!

Off topic. I was just wondering why this guy is using Chuck's name? Can he make his own alias here and not somebody else:doh: ? Is he really Chuck?

No it is not Chuck Norris. Chuck was born March 10 1940 not January 14 1911

I wouldn't want to use ANYONE'S name who could keep Bill "Superfoot" Wallace at bay. They're both badasses!

congratulations on purchasing a ride worthy of chuck norris.

I know most bumpers would straighten themselves as soon as you looked at them, but 80s are made of sterner stuff. I recommend a couple of roundhouse kicks and you will be good to go.

What Dan said. Had a similar situation with some minor damage to the rear crossmember on one of the three times I've been rearended with stock bumper (b4 Kaymar!). Three estimates to replace crossmember were all in the $600-800 range. This was the rear crossmember only. Both end caps were untouched.

Brent,
Check the Daniel Stern web site and get your truck some extra-bright stop lights. It may help if you would plan ahead before slamming on the brakes 5 ft before a stop sign. :D

I can't envision anyone with the cajones to "rear end" Chuck Norris. :grinpimp:
