Hello all,

I'm the new owner of a 95 Land Cruiser. Found it locally after looking for a few months. Clean carfax, 105k on the clock, green ext, gray int. I'll post some pics in a few days. It's got the gold emblems which have almost turned back to silver and the brush guard, taillight guard combo that so many folks did back in the late 90's. The paint is a little beat up but the rims are nice and theres no body rust. I've searched the forums for a number of topics and learned alot (I also have a gx470 and use the forums on clublexus) I have a few observations and questions for those who care to read on. Thanks in advance.

Lots of play in the steering (seems like 2" on center)

I've got those clicks from the front when the steering is at full lock. Time to re-pack those birfs.

Stock stereo - sounds like crap. Big suprise. Antenna wont go all the way down - another shocker. Im liking the Scion idea people have been posting about. That plus some stereo speaker replacements. I'll tackle that soon. I prefer the stock look.

Truck came with a tow hitch but I cant find a connector for the lights. I'll keep digging back there. Maybe it was never installed? Im planning on towing a race car on a trailer. All told about 4200 pounds. Yep - I know. It'll be slow.

Mileage is down around 12 although when the gauge shows empty - I can only fill the tank with about 18 gallons. Hmmmm

Leather on the front seats has been sprayed or dyed to look new again. It looks nice but feels kind of "rough" Advice? I threw some lexol on it without much success.

I think she needs shocks. Since I only do ski trips and the occaisional beach run - stockers should be fine. This is my "work" truck - so I cant spend too much on it.

Rear defroster is dead and the seatbelts dont retract very well anymore but those are minor. Otherwise - shes a runner. Looking for another 100k out of her.

Welcome to the forum.

12mpg is about right for typical urban driving and unknown age of tuneup parts. Guage behavior is about right also - my low fuel lights, then fills with about 20 gallons (of 24 capacity).

Factory shocks are a rippin deal at $100 for four from Cdan - spray penetrating oil on all the bolts (use a straw thingy to get to the threads up top you cannot see) - use fingers to position the straw. Couple times a week in advance. PB blaster is my choice.

Repack the front axle and put new seals in it - parts again from Cdan here on the forum unless you don't mind being half done and finding your dealer forgot a couple critical $4 seals...

Rear defroster might be the connectors on the window from someone cleaning the window. They are loose and can appear to be on when they're not. Seatbelts. Someone had excellent luck cleaning theirs with mild soap and they retracted as new again. Takes a while to properly do this.

If you tow, be sure your cooling system is fully maintained and up to snuff, and of course every fluid should be changed out even if you don't tow.

got lockers?????

Agree on the seat belts. Clean the straps really well. With age, they pick up a lot of finger / body oil, ( things we don't talk about!). You need a cleaner that will penetrate the fibers. Also, clean the guides where the belts pass thru. You'll find a lot of (we don't talk about it) oil there too.

Thanks all,

Yep - I know this isnt clublexus..

Nope - no locker. Just your plain old full time 4 wheel.

I'll clean the seatbelts straight away.

Funny - the dealer told me not to change the front axle fluids. He said at this age - adding a new fluid could screw things up. Nice huh? He's the guy you want maintaining your vehicles.

Looks like I'll have to spend some money with CDan...:)

WTF?? I guess he just wants the $$ for replacing the front drivetrain on down the road.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome! :D :flipoff2: :D

Welcome, On the towing harness, it may have been tocked up on the underside. Its closer to the passenger side down around the rear crossmember looking up.

welcome from a fellow jerseyan oh and by the way:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
if you need some guidance we have our fair share of insanity locally (junk:flipoff2: )

Is there a local group that gets together in Jersey? I may need some tech advice as I tackle the various "upgrades" and services.

Ya never know...

Welcome :flipoff2:

Yeah, there are some guys on this board who live in Jersey, but trust me, you want nothing to do with any of them. :flipoff2:

If your trailer wiring harness is installed, you can track it by finding where it would poke through the rubber grommet. Look under the body, behind the passenger side rear tire -- you should see it around there.

As for the leather, there are quite a few "leatherique" fans around here -- you might give that a shot.

All stock parts, if you're smart, should be ordered from CruiserDan (look for his contact info in the Vendors Section/Forum. Dan works at American Toyota in NM. Trust us...you can't go wrong with Dan...until he starts working his voodoo on your rig...

Thanks Doug. I appreciate the info.

Just realized no one responded to my line about the amount of play in the steering. I'll hit the search key and see what comes up. It does seem like excessive play on center.

Thanks!
