greetings all, i am the new owner of a 1981 bj42 in victoria bc. it was brought into bc from alberta in 2000 and has lots of rust on the body but the frame and drive train are good.i'vedone minor work on diesels and am impressed with how easily it starts, smooth run and power.
anyways , i'm getting it ready for use and ironing out the kinks, looking for input on these issues:
need wiring diagram- can someone copy and send me one?
want to buy some bulbs from lordco-the old ones in the rear are wrecked and i need to know the bulb numbers(eg 1157) for 24 volt-reverse,run/stop and turn
rear light sockets are wrecked- can i install 12 volt lights from aftermarket and run 24 volt bulbs in them?
temp gauge goes to hot immediately with key on and stays there during run- does this sound like temp sender faulty or bad ground at gauge?
brake warning on immediately with key on and stays on during run- level ok
although not really tech, i'm wondering what a good seat replacement would be- the oe's are shot on the seat- has anyone replaced with little fab or mod?
so if any you can help me out or if you live in the victoria area and would like to meet up i'd appreciate it.
regards,
chris

Chris, worn altenator brushes often give weird instrument readings on the BJ60's. You might want to check those.

1) Wiring diagrams: Phone your local dealer and get Pub No#36044E if available. Alternatively go to http://www.birfield.com then to manual downloads and find this publication, then download it. You could buy a Max Ellery Landcuiser 4/6 cyl 1972-1990 manual to throw in the truck.

2) Buy bulbs from the dealer: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?p=465690#post465690

3) Yes for running the 24V bulbs in an aftermarket fixture.

4) Could be bad temp sender. Does anything happen the to gauge when you remove the wire from the sender at the thermostat?

5) Put a volt meter on the alt when it is running. Usually it is the brake warning and fuel sendimenter that both light up to indicate low voltage. Check the switch under the parking lever to see if it is releasing.

6) Supra seats work well. You have to fab mounts.

7) If the truck has that much rust, chances are gorunds may not be great. Run new ground straps from the engine to the frame, and from the body to the frame, and check the battery to frame connection too. This may help with a number of things.

Chris,
We met at the Tsawwassen Ferry terminal, en route to Victoria. I'm the guy that was pulling an old Mustang home. Anyhow, i've got manuals here that you're welcome to have a look at.
Let me know.
Cheers
Dan

You can also buy 24V bulbs from albright lighting - just across from the Future Shop / Michaels mall - I don't have part numbers, but if you take in the bulbs they've been able to get them for me (usually in stock). The other place I've gone is the bus depot repair shop - (on Glanford just south of Vanalman on the west side of the road) - I just walked around back and asked in their stock room. They gave me some funny looks, but sold be the bulbs I wanted pretty cheap (I think it was the brake lights, cost was 1$ each)

Also, I could be wrong on this, but doesn't the brake light also stay on if your vacuum is hooped? I guess this would show up in brake behaviour as well. I think you test this by pumping the brakes a bunch with the vehicle off, then hold down the brake and start the truck - if the pedal drop down more with the same pressure, then vacuum is good - other will hopefully correct me if that is wrong...

Be nice if you could post brand and part #'s on the 24V bulb thread in the FAQ, so we can build a database to assist the parts drones...

bj42

thanks to all for the replies-i did read the post of toyota bulb part #'s but was hoping for a good deal in town. i'll try both tomorrow and post results. also knew of the birfield resource, but is there a diagram for a 1981 bj42 24 volt electrical system(not in french)? i found the engine manual which looks good but only found a body/drivetrain manual for the 60.
i was wondering if the temp gauge and brake light were related, like a known glitch- will check into this more. the rear wiring is full of bad grounds and trailer bitch wiring from hell so this is all being rewired. good suggestion to rebuild all grounds. i'll cheap out with the aftermarket lights, though 24 volt led light units look cool eh? is there a truck store in victoria/van island that sells 24 volt gear? lordco?
hey victoria landcruisers- yeah i remember meeting you dan-will try to contact you. are you in victoria too evan?
so, supra seats are nice, anyone else change their ride?
regards,
chris

Only occasionally on weekends... I was at UVic, but I've moved to UBC now...

as for finding 24V stuff in town... I've ordered a few dribs and drabs from lordco (just did the 24V headlight swap with relays, ordered all through Lordco), and those two places I listed already, other than that, I've not found a magic store yet. I've also bought some electrical stuff from West Marine, but I don't remember there being anything specific 24V. I have vague memories of seeing some 24V stuff at Trotac marine, but can't really remember.

I'll look to see if I have pn's from those light, but I don't think I do - stupidly I didn't write them down... It was just a case of taking in the bulb and giving it to the parts guy, then giving him 20 mins to root around in his stock. I can also look at the bulbs (I bough a good number when I found them), maybe they have pn on them...

Both manuals I mentioned have wiring diagrams at the back. The factory manual is easier to read, as the pages fold out and are larger.

coolant temperature sensor

possibly diagnosed the temp gauge reading hot with key in on position and during run-there is a sensor under thermostat missing a wire. is this the sensor for the gauge? cannot find any loose harness wire nearby and nothing in the alternator and oil pressure sender harnesses. it is a single post sensor that had a brown connector remaining. can someone check their ride or do you know which harness is supposed to have this. does anyone know the wiring colour code for this sensor?

chris

So, I don't know if this is any help... I only have the replacement bulbs for the instrument panel left (no numbers on them), the dual filament brake lights (number on them is "1662 28V32/60P") I think I got those from the bus depot, and the smaller bulbs from the front turn signals (they say "CEC 623 Taiwan") on them. Probably not much help...

Chris,
I have 88 Honda prelude seats, they are awsome. real comfortable, and require just a little mods. I think only one steal plate to move the bolt holes over, and then one thick 2in long angle iron, because the mount for the honda seat on one side is on the side, and not on the botom like the cruiser set up. used the cruiser slider.
Cheers,
Deny

welcome chris,

some of the 24v bulbs @ albright have been discontinued, but you can still get "some" cheaper than toyota (beware the metro dealer in victoria).

rigpig is a great guy, and can get you pointed in the right direction here in victoria. plus he's really really cute too!:princess: hi dan!

i also have manuals, but i'm out of "town" a bit, not sure where you are located, but it's another local option.

lordco in lanford is a little more helpful with getting "truck" related parts (go figgure:rolleyes: ), but not so much with 24v stuff, you really need to know exactly what you are after before go there. just my experience.

nice to see we have another local cruiser guy here south island.

thanks for the info crusty and deny. i got the lights sorted out, but at 4.50 a pop from the dealer. downtown lordco were helpless although they did say that these part #"s like p21w are euro spec and they can find bulbs with this. the cruiser is on the road but i need some help with the temp gauge. the story so far...
gauge goes to high immediately with key on and stays there. temp sensor under thermostat is unplugged with no wire in sight. does any one know the harness this wire is supposed to be in and its colour code? i'm ass uming that this is a gauge sender and explains the wonky gauge. hope you can help,
regards,
chris

Chris, look at the private messege that I responded back to you, and I would also try to take apart and check out the harness by the alternator, all the way back to the fender, my truck had issues there, when I first got it, then on my other BJ42, it had electrical problems, so that is the first place I looked, and sure enough two wires had the insulation rubbed off, and as soon as I replaced the wires, back to normal. I would assume there is a wire in there that you can't see, then connected it up to the sensor.
Just a thought,
Cheers,
Deny
