Hi all,

First post. This website is indeed a treasure trove of information. Thanks to all for contributing to it.

I recently bought a RHD JDM '89 BJ73, and drove it home from Saskatchewan. After the usual insane Quebec bureaucratic and inspection hoops to jump through, it's finally legal. I'm planning a trip come next month, to Mexico and beyond. Before I leave, I'd really like to have the truck gone over properly by someone who really knows what they are doing, to make sure it's up to it. Although I hope to eventually do some/most of my own wrenching, for the moment, given my limited amount of experience and the trip I want to take, I think a professional is a good idea...

I live in Montreal. Can anyone here recommend a good mechanic in the city or surrounding area who is familiar with these LCs?

Thanks again for this great resource.
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave, what is the engine in those? I'm from Montreal (south shore). PM me i wouldn't mind meeting and checking your truck out. And point you in the right directions depending what you need to have done.

Hi Dave and welcome.
I would change all the oils and coolant,air/oil filters and grease the drive shafts and front end.
Those are very easy jobs for a beginner. If it is starting easy when cold and not blowing smoke ,its fine.
These are very low maintenance vehicles if you carry out the preventive maintenance
Eleblanc's offer of an unbiased opinion is a good idea before you let it near any experts;)

Hi Rosco
Yep, good advice, and am getting to it. It starts pretty easily when cold and apart from a very little under heavy load, is not blowing any smoke... Fuel economy is hovering around 12.2 L/100km, which seems a tad high, from what I can tell by reading on the forum. But apart from that, I'm pretty thrilled with it.

Cheers

Hello Dave,

I just bought a 89 BJ 74 and am planning a bigger trip within the next couple of years. I'm in Fredericton, New Brunswick so almost a neighbour;-)

Anyway I'm either hoping to drive around south america or even something bigger like follow what they did on the "Long Way Round" (Drive around the world through eastern europe, russia, mongolia and then canada and states). Anyway until then I want to get more familiar with the truck and figure out a way how to sleep two people in the the BJ74. Also would like to design a roof rack that will fit the hard top.

You'll have to post some pictures of your trip!

Matthias

I meet with Dave yesterday, very clean rig. Not much needed work to be done on this rig.

First time i saw one of those next Gen 3B engine, very intersting. First thing i notice is there is no crank case cover on the side of the block under the manifold!

And my first RHD drive!

and lucky him he got to drive my newly turbo 3B.
