New to IH8MUD and on the hunt for a fairly stock 80 series to be my daily driver and hunt/fish/camp/mild offroad in with my 15 year old son.

Looking forward to learning a lot from the experienced owners in the forum!

How much are you looking to spend? By FJ80 do you mean you're searching for a 91-92 with a 3fe motor? See anything in the classifieds that piques your interest?

There's a decent looking one down the street from me for under $2,000, but it needs work. I've seen the guy driving around, but I don't know anymore that what's written in his Craigslist ad.

$5k—$10k range. I'm including the FZJs in my search as well. I've looked at a few in the North Alabama area but didn't find quite what I was looking for. I'm now keeping a close eye on the classifieds on here.

I don't mind driving up into TN or East GA to find one. Not the kind of guy who buys something like this without kicking the tires, though, so long distance eBay and Craigslist finds are prob off the table for me.

I see you are in SC too? Where is this LC at? I have looked in CL and I don't see anything that cheap?

Welcome to to forum. :flipoff2: There's good deals to find out there. Just don't rush yourself. My advice would be to define to yourself what features you want in the truck, read the Slee newbie guide, and go from there. Different years offer different key features. Only you know what features are desirable for both you and your son. For me disc brakes and air bags were a must for the family.

Thanks for the welcomes. Will let you know what I find. Hopefully something soon before I HAVE to have a 3rd car!

Fountain inn. Craigslist Greenville. He had it running not that long ago. I've seen him at advance and other places around town. I don't think it needs a lot -time mostly.

I like the simplicity of 91-94 (my 93 has disc brakes), but there's something to be said for OBD2 and airbags.

Good Luck @hsvbamafan
Are you using ifttt to help your search?

@hsvbamafan
It's an app. Also a website. Ifttt means If This Then That. You can customize recipes to inform you of things quickly

Example:
If
Land Cruiser is posted to Craigslist
Then
Send me an email/text message immediately.

I should be using it to find parts for my truck, but between my kids, real estate, and my wife - well, I just prioritize my activities and the build isn't high enough yet. :meh:

You can get really creative with ifttt. It's a powerful tool for search and so much more. It has its own forum.

Ok. I use Macrodroid for automating my phone. Haven't set up any processes to help my search yet though. I'll look into it this weekend.

If you're looking for a commuter that's great for camping and fishing (and a mild build), do not discount the 100. The only reason I sold my 100 and went "backwards" to an 80 was to get solid axles. As a family 4x4, the 100 will devour highway miles as pleasantly as it devours mass amounts of gear and cargo. And, it's still more capable off road than nearly anything else out there. You should drive a 100 before you cross it off the list.

I agree with midfat. If I were looking for a daily driver cruiser with only light off-pavement duties, I'd be looking 100 series.

I was mainly kidding about the 100. Seems like most of the ones I've come across in the condition I'd want were generally a bit out of the price range I'm trying to stay in. But I have not been following them on this forum's classifieds.

Welcome.

91-94 are the simple years with the 91-92 being the most simple (3FE motor is incredibly simple and bombproof). The 93-94 are very simple too with the 1FZ-FE being a strong, bulletproof motor. Just a few more things to worry about.

You will hear guys say not to buy a 3FE because they are slow. Well, all 80s are slow unless you supercharge or turbo them. They are designed to always get you there not always get you there quickly.

I own two 92s and a 93.

When I am looking for an 80 I look for the following:

Rust free
Cloth
Does it run

Everything else can be fixed or upgraded by a  mechanic. (Full disclosure: I would consider myself a two banana mechanic now).

Hey, selling my 80 in south Mississippi. Listed on here in classifieds. Good luck. I love mine but it's time for a new project. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Thanks, Tim. Great looking rig but a little more built than I'm looking for. Does it have factory lockers?
