Hi gang,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I have been surfing this forum for a few months. I could not stand it any longer and I can now blame everyone here for causing me to go out and buy my first FJ40:)

I spent the first few evenings of ownership changing all the fluids, flushing the brakes etc.

I have driven the truck to and from work for the last week (9 miles round trip) and am having a blast. Loaded my guitars and amps into it over the weekend and drove it to a gig. Never throught of an FJ40 as a gig mobile but it I think I'll use it for this purpose from now on!

I look forward to learning more about the Land Cruiser from ih8mud as I drive it and fix it up..

Thanks guys,

Yes it is a '74. I will have plenty of questions soon and will need a TONNE of help I'm sure. For now, I'm just gonna drive it.

Welcome :flipoff2:

Please give us more details on the rig

Where are you?

What disposable income!?:crybaby:

As far as details.. It is seems to be a fairly solid and original example.. The front fenders are horrible and will be the first item to update. Don't know if they were banged up on a trail or what, but someone riveted on some plastic extensions that don't cut it.

Looks to have very little rust and the floors are solid with minor surface rust. Has the jack etc.

After a week in the garage and driveway, not a drop of oil on the ground.

Driving impressions: I have owned several old trucks - my last being a 1936 Dodge Brothers Fire Truck, so I knew what I was in for when purchasing the Land Cruiser as far as driveability. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by how well this rig runs out. The motor turns over instantly hot or cold with absolutely no hesitation. It has drums all around and after flushing the system completely it takes very little pedal effort to bring it a halt QUICKLY and without any pull to either side. The 3 speed shifts smoothly and is surprisingly quiet. At 55mph in town I can hear the motor, tires and the wind. I tested the 4WD in front of my house and it seems to work ok and is quiet. No power steering obviously but it steers better than the old Fire Truck with no play in the box. It does seem to catch the grooves on uneven surfaces. All lights and guages work. Horn does not.

I'll attach a few more pictures including one of the mud underneath before I cleaned it. There was so much mud underneath and inside the truck when I purchased it. Perfect! Can't wait to get it dirty again.

I'm close to you (Jupiter) - My '72 looks like this right now, but soon....we'll have to hook up sometime for a two man parade down the beach. Let me know if you need help or have questions, I'm far from an expert but may be able to help.

Congrats and welcome! (and yes, get ready to burn some serious cabbage - on the bright side, it feels much better spending cruiser dollars than it does paying the mortgage)

Welcome Sean, Following ruts in the road is usually a lack of caster. My guess is that you have aftermarket extended shackles installed on the front of your 40. You can resolve this issue by installing caster shims or going back to stock length shackles.

Can't wait to see how your rig turns out. Looks great. You're ON for that cruise down the beach!

Ok everyone, for the complete NOOBIE... What is all this talk regarding the orientation of the BEZEL?

Thanks,

Sean

The bezel is the white thing around your headlights. The fat part goes at the top the way yours is mounted. The bezel is mounted to the "bib". If you mount the bezel upside down the "bezel police" will hunt you down until you fix it.

Nice score, and welcome to MUD .. :flipoff2:

Now you know you'll have to play plenty more gigs to pay for that chick magnets mods right ....

I have a lot to learn.... Thanks for the info regarding the shackles.. Will look into that right away.

After 2 seconds of intense studying I am ready to join the Bezel Police Force.

Ahhh.. Found something to spend money on right away. The original horn relay is shot. Called my local Toyota dealer and they have the part (#86530-35020). I'm sure this thing is gonna nickel and dime me to death, but hell, we only live once.

Nickel and diming is a gross understatement. Make a list, buy all your crap now(b4 it is discontinued), and buy it. You will not regret it. FWI- if you are looking for showroom, plan on spending 15k min. Trust me, I know.

And welcome:flipoff2:
