this weekend I finished up the design, first print and assembly of my LX450 front console cupholder. It replaces the LX450 subwoofer and cover and matches (mostly) the curve of the console. I thought I'd share.

If you want one, let me know and I'll come up with a reasonable price. This is about 18 hours of printer time and about $4 in plastic.

This is my first model and it was done in Google Skechup

LX console even worse than the LC.

Good idea and a creative use of the worthless sub.

So here's my thoughts. With the speaker and enclosure removed you could open cut a little bit of material that extends to the shifter console and slightly widen the opening. Then you could make a new enclosure that fits inside the console that offers storage and enough space for two 20oz drinks. This is my plan for someday. But I'll probably make it out of aluminum since I only have access to welders.

For the moment I have the sub removed and cut out the speaker. I next filled in the gaps with some weather stripping so I don't lose anything and just use it as a cubby.

Honestly though, it took so damn long to model and print the thing, the only reason to do this was to learn Sketchup for better things. 10 hours learning, 18 hours printing... Buying the cooldaddy cooler would have been a better use of time.

Glad you came up with something for the LX450 guys. I have a cup holder for the square hole that came in that spot on the Yota counterparts but never came up with something for the LX450 in that sub woofer spot. Take a look at the cup holders I have for the 80 series. Don't get too excited with all the options. I will be slowly winding down the company over the next 12-18 months and many of the options will start to disappear for good off my site. I just can't keep the little side business going with a full time job and 3 kids with #4 on the way.

I like your work but is really wanted to learn sketchup. As far as scaling a 3D printing business to something worthwhile, one would have to start with something super valuable. The alternative would to prototype a high volume item and then produce it conventionally.

Will you be making your models available for others after you wind her up?

Yes. Once I wrap up the business I will then set up a website for the file download for a small fee. Probably around Christmas time of 2017. I did want to got into mass production on all of my designs but the cost for injection molds would never pay for itself. You have to sell many thousands of them to break even. I did the math and realized I would need to sell to the majority of 80 series owners in the US before I made a profit. My products are cool but not that cool. 3D printing is the perfect fit for the small market products that could never come into existence in the mass production world.
