That would better, the skinny rear end drives me nuts. I put spacers on mine and it work better - was getting frame rub.

The skinny rear end does cause the problem in the ruts - the ruts cause the problem in the ruts:) I just think the rear is lighter than the front and the front falls in and the rear stays up and tracks differently.

Some drivers report motion sickness in their passengers LOL. I think they need to let a bit more air out of the rears so the sidewalls can flex a bit;)

I measure my fz79 front chassis rails under the grill out side to out side and measured a mates vdj79 front chassis from memory i think the chassis rails were about 100mm wider on the vdj79 but the rear end of the chassis were the same so id say its wider from under the dash
for track width of the 80's 79's and late 79's etc you can get them of redbook.com.au
but the gxl have wider tack due to wider tyres but if you compare all the std models with skinnys on you get the proper measurements

Correct, the VDJ79 uses the old frame from the cab back

The frame rails are wider to accept the V8 diesel engine, that's why they had to widen the engine compartment as well.

I like the front end because if you look in the engine compartment with a 1HZ in it you have tons of room for accessories, turbos, toys galore.

Louis

Actually they widened the front end to help with the roll over tests, the front axle is wider as well and tracks wider than the rear does. So less roll over in the tests.

Cheers,

Michael

Thats a new one ,where did you hear that? The engine wouldnt have fitted in regardless

Hello,

I have noticed that 71/78/79 models have coils up front, five lug bolts, new front grill, dashboard modifications and EFI gas engines. The 79 dispensed with the 75's folding windshield and detachable top as well. I have seen once an FZJ74, which was a 73 with all these changes.

On the 40 Series there was the BJ40 (B engine) and the BJ42 (3B engine,) as well as the HJ45 (H engine I think) and the HJ47 (2H engine.)

Now the dumb question: does the "model number plus one" designation refer to turboed engines only? Or does it refer to modifications/improvements as well?

Model number plus one did refer to a turbo but then it changed in 98/99 or there abouts.

The FJZ74 still had the folding windscreen as I guess it was too expensive to delete it and replace it with a fixed screen for a model that was nearing the end of its production.
I think it was discontinued in 04?

AFAIK the coil springs are the only real thing they go by for example the VDJ78/79 is a change over the previous model.
IMO the VDJ78/79 should have had a new code because of its widened front.

The are dozens of exceptions to the rules though. Why is an 81 so different to any other fully optioned 80 series?

Hello Rosco,

Thank you for the explanation.

A rule with exceptions, interesting. Ongoing modifications/improvements probably forced them into use.

And that not to mention successive generations of engineering nuts in the drawing boards, each with its own view. Two hundred on board, two hundred opinions...

As I said in another post, I miss the 73/74, and hopefully I will get one in decent shape one day.

Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ 71
it has the pic , but inline with the door handle going to the back above the rear black vent there is a little haze and thats were the 4500efi sticker gos on the fzj71's so the pic is probably for "illustrations only" because it is hard to find pics of the new hzj71:hhmm:
