Hoping there's a thread on here already, but if not, hi all Boxer from Sydney Australia here. I read this forum a bit and it's been very helpful, but I only just joined as I find my life is controlled by forums memberships these days.... My fault for being into bikes, cars, racing etc...

Anyhow, my 80 has notched up about 500,000km now and the rings are starting to go. It still drives great, but it's time to give it some love. The head is fresh and has been redone for LPG, but the bottom end is untouched.

Anyway, my main question is can you remove the sump on a 1FZFE in the car without too much hassle, thus allowing you to do a re-ring and big end bearings in the car. I don't really have the facilities to pull the engine out where I am, but I can do this.

If I can do this I'd send the head off for a check over, then re-ring and maybe once it's run in again maybe throw some cams in it.

Any help would be much appreciated

Un bolt the motor mounts and lift the engine by the crank pulley and that'll give you enough clearance to get the pans off it's possible

Do you have compression numbers, any engine oil analysis results? Is the engine burning a lot of oil (how much), blowing smoke/vapor out the tailpipe, using coolant,----??

Thanks for the welcome

Good call, I haven't done a compression test yet, but it is using a lot of oil. We did a 1000km trip on the weekend and it used 5 litres. It's not using coolant and the head was done not too long ago anyway, plus there's no mixing in the oil, so that eliminates that, I just think the oil control rings are worn out. This and I used to be a mechanic a few years ago, so it kinda makes sense. For the hell of it I'll do a comp test though, what should they have? (range of good to bad)

Oh, this and as it progressively got worse I recently changed the oil to a 40-70 high mileage engine oil and it's helped to stop it blowing smoke alot

It can be done but after pulling the head and oil pans its only about 10 bolts from pulling the motor and pulling the oil pans is much easier once its out. You could pull the head, oil pans, and pistons, hone, new rings and rod bearings, and put it all back together. The way I got my oil pans out way drop the sway bar, the tie rod, and unbolt the motor mounts and jack up the motor from the crank pulley.

It can be done, but it is the hard way and you would have to be pretty spry. It is just easier to pull it and do it on a stand.

It is not like an old Holden pickup where you can just open the bonnet and climb in and stand next to the engine.

Hi, Boxer welcome to Mud. Hey from my experience when ever i get in to the jobs like that you don't win much with the motor in time wise..And its a lot easier on your back and knees with engine out. So pull it out set in on the stand. Another thing, if you get in to do the rings i would recommend to get complete kit of bearings seals etc. go through it and get it done once. Good luck and have fun.
