so the new harness is in my old man's 40 but his installer didn't wire in a regulator (bought one though) or the amp gauge.

i see from this schematic http://www.rusmannx.com/zzzpostpics/71_40regulator.gif that one of the amp gauge terminals goes to the starter motor, but at which location?

the other terminal on back of the gauge goes to the alernator (B) and the ignition switch (AM, black/red on my column which only goes to the fuse block) which is a simple splice.

this is the regulator the installer bought (no idea where). i think the blue is ground, but no idea on the others.

the new regulator is what parts stores get you instead of the manual one

I haven't seen anyone figure out how to wire it who didn't have the right plug already present, as in later models - waiting to see who has a solution....

I am using a solid state regulator out of a late 60's Chrysler. Works perfectly. I have a brief write up about it over in the tech section.

for wiring/connector stuff look here

wiring color codes

a better schematic

Look at the schematic for yourself in the link above---appears OEM is a white wire to the solenoid on the pos side on a 71---makes sense

I am away frrom home or I'd take a pic of mine

I used a later higher amp alt with an internal regulator

It connects to the same terminal as the + battery cable, since it is the main power feed from the battery to the chassis.

If I had to guess the wires for the VR, Red is hot, black ground, green field and blue is the idiot light.

i would to but don't want to bother with making a bracket to hold one.

at least you have a guess. i'll try it.
not sure why i should bother. without a VR the alt puts out 12-13v anyway. of course the lights all dim with a drop in RPM but they always have.

What kind of alternator do you have? Without a voltage regulator, the stock alternator puts out nothing, zip, nada, nichts, nichivo.

alt snafu

:lol::lol:

or sometimes zippity do da and/or Sweet FA,

those outputs would indicate that it is incorrectly hooked up or caput, finito, knackered, or FUBAR :D

For me that would be S.O.P, business as usual, or S.O.S
I am not familiar with your personal R.O.E :)

As far as mounting the alternator I had put a 79 2F in mine and just bought a later model bracket and installed it. The early one worked but I wanted to upgrade the alt anyway

I posted up to be sure about the hook up and IIRC it was PinHead who told me about the jumper wire on the back of the alt for the exciter voltage.

Been running fine ever since

Best of Luck with it

i have no idea what alternator is on it. something that fits the stock bracket and probably came from autozone years ago. It is keeping the battery charged and there is only one large wire on it which goes from the alt to the starter. There is also a plug on the back of the alt with three wires, none of which are hooked up to anything.
