So I have been lurking and reading, this site has awesome information and you guys seem to be super helpful. I barely know enough about this obsession to ask somewhat intelligent questions, so don't smack me upside the noggin too hard!

I have a 1981 BJ42 coming from Spain, and should have it late this month. What are the recommended fluids? I found the guide here on service internals etc. Where should I get a manual for it if it does not have one? Any tools I should buy now? I know I need a roll cage, and an AC and have sourced those. I will also replace the split rims. What else am I over looking?

Since everyone likes pictures. The below has 159 photos I think!

Nice rig! Congrats!

If it's running and driving, no special tools are needed. Just your regular hand tools - metric sockets, box end wrenches, etc. Pretty much everything is 10, 12, 14 or 17mm. I always used Rotella 15W-40 in my 42. It worked just fine. You just don't want to use the low emission diesel oils for modern trucks. They don't play well with older engines.

If you haven't checked out the diesel section here on Mud, do it. There's lots of knowledge over there. There's also plenty of write ups on adding turbos to the 3B engine. A turbo will make it a very nice driving vehicle if you decide to go that route.

Welcome to the brotherhoodgotta love the 3b. Nowhere quickly anywhere eventually. That's my motto. Love the blue color. Looks like a sweet find. Care to share costs?

You need to put a spiny thing on to get places quicker!!!

I have 82 bj42 and its great. Spiny thing going on soon i now have all needed parts

Thanks gents! The information on the wrench sizes is very helpful. I have the ones mentioned but will probably grab some extras. I buy every 1/2 and 9/16 they get at a local pawn shop. It is running or was when they put it in the conex, now I am just waiting for Somalia pirates to steal the ship or sink it.

I bought it on ebay so I paid more than anyone else in the world would that day. I gave $14,865 for it, which I think is fair. I bought it from Shon Landy, a friend of mine is on here and he bought a similar truck from Shon.

I am poking around in the diesel forum. I will have to think about a turbo, I tend to mull things over a lot. My understanding is 50 is about the most I can get without one, how fast will it go with a turbo? I started thinking about a Land Cruiser two years ago.

Also, what is the inside joke on the bezel or do I have to figure that out on my own?

Assuming the split rims you want to switch out are 16", you will find plenty of buyers in the classifieds.

With the 3.73 gearing, you should be good for more than 50mph. Maybe 52-53. Congrats on your purchase. ...and Welcome!

The 78 and earlier 4x series have a bezel with round ends. Those fit either way. Thick goes on the on the top but about half that show up here the thin section on top.

The US got 3.70:1 gears starting in 79. But most the other markets continues getting 4.11:1. Did the one with B engines get the 3.70:1?

Thanks for the rim and bezel information.
I don't know if I can handle 53 mph!

I got a great T Shirt image sentr to me of how the Bezel is to be place. Once you see it you will remember it.

You need a radiator.....because it doesn't have one...and if that's how it drove in to the conex box....you are gonna need much more.

Front bezel and bib are NOT 1981, they are 1978 or earlier ....

Also, pretty good chance its not from spain, but from south america someplace.....

Just read the for sale.ad for your 42.....says restored inside and out....which must be a joke.

This is not mine it was sent from a very kind member to help us all.

The turbo wont make it alot faster it just makes it easier to drive. You dont have to rev the crap out of it before a shift haha.

LandPimp, could you please pick it apart for me? I would appreciate the input from any of you guys. I uploaded a photo with radiator installed.

The story is it was restored around 10 years ago and then parked.

eta I don't have any newer photos, since they ran it through a shop.

Oh, when I click my link it takes me to imgur account I made this week.

Can anyone else see them? I hate to upload a ton of photos on the site.
