This public lands project has increased the possibility that this area will continue to be open for off road experiences for all. If you have not spent any time in this area, now is the time to explore all the different trails and roads in the Gordy's Hill off road area. Good off season camping areas too. The signage helps the driver to pick the area to explore.

Jeff I am grateful to you guys getting all this done, its a fantastic addition especially with the trail ratings. I'm hopeful the yahoo crowd will respect the effort.

Hope the general public will respect the designated routes and not use the signs as target practice. People come for all over the USA to use the many BLM areas in the Southwest. This should help them to know what they can do in this area.

A big official thumbs up from HDC! Well done Jeff and NM4x4!:bounce::bounce2:

This is an eye opener for me. I always thought of Gordy's only as extreme rock garden trails. Now that there are marked trails with rating, I will plan to explore the easier trails with my Twondy! Thanks again Jeff!

100% professional. Well done!

All I had to do was read the sign. I need to upgrade my rig. 🤣

I have spent some time down there, I would be happy to show you and any others around. This is a good area to explore, until mid summer.

The NM Game and Fish offered grants for projects for OHV use in NM. NMOHVA and NM4W applied for it and got the grant. We had to front the money and do the work. We get paid back. $25 K for the grant!! We could not of done this without NMOHVA.
BLM helped with sign design. In 2 and 1/2 days, volunteers placed 25 posts and signs. There much more rocks than dirt at Gordy's!! Tough manual labor.
20 plus folks showed up, each time, and busted ass. Signs are posted at the start and finish of each trail.
Youtube videos show many of the trails from easy to extreme.
This entire area is for all off road vehicles and it's great for mountain biking, too. Back in the day, The Socorro Fat Tire bike festival used this area for many of their rides. The Owl Cafe and the Buckhorn Cafe, in San Antonio is a great place to finish up after a day of 4 LOW. Dirt road leads south out of this area to good eats!!!

I wish Gordy's Hill was something that was known about when I was at NM Tech (30 years ago). I feel like I remember there was a NMT 4WD club in the 2000s that had some involvement in helping to create or map out some trails too but maybe my old brain is incorrect.

There was a off road group out of NMT, not sure if they are officially still active, but I have met students from NMT on the trails down there. The Socorro Fat Tire festival was run by a group of NMT folks , with White Sands folks and a local bike shop in Socorro. ( The Bike shop was run by local bike legend, Daniel Boone, yes, his real name, who had previously co owned Two Wheel Drive bikes in ABQ, in the 80's. ) They led many routes in the Gordy's Area and I got lucky and signed on for the first ever MTB ride to the Trinity Site during the festival. Led by White Sands MTB riders. The locals know the back country areas around Socorro!!!

We made it to Gordy’s and the new signs are just lovely and informative! Thank you for all your hard wheeling and work to make that happen!
we had a lovely birthday adventure weekend in and around Gordy’s… made a new friend and enjoyed the scenery very much as well as the bees and butterflies that visited us at camp!

Great Photos!!!!
Glad you spent some time down there. I know that night picture with the jagged cliff , with the post on top. The Barite mines area. We went into the mine there today. Fluorite and crystals in the walls. Thanks for posting these pics.

Hey, that's me in my 6M1 (dark green) 80. I think that was a day when we were exploring down there (many years ago) with Robbie Antonson.

Juane - thanks for sharing the photos. That goes back many years.
Trail teams event possibly? I took the 3rd gen 4R and had some coworkers from Malaysia and China along for the ride, AH the old Intel days.

I agree. I think that was a Trail Teams event when the new FJ Cruiser came out and they were showing up and showing off at events and gatherings all over the country. I remember going to Gordy's Hill and another event down in the Ruidoso area where they participated. We liked the FJ Cruiser but it was too small for my growing family to be practical and not long after we got the 100-series.
