Afternoon Fellas, Corey Allan here up in Maine; I’ve been a lurker for a bit and now I guess I get my hazing, lol..
We bought an 03 LX this past weekend; not as amazing as I had hoped but far from a lost cause. We’ve decided to do some rust prevention prior to putting the LX into service. These Maine winters are brutal, they’ll turn a nice 100 into swiss cheese real quick like, + my girlfriend isnt fastidious about psi washing on a frequent basis in the inclement seasons. I ship out so I cant make up for that shortcoming. Question, to what extent do you all go to mitigate and prevent further rust on a clean truck? I’ll add pics and let you know what I have going on here. Rear hatch is just starting in the bad places but not nearly as bad as Ive seen. It also looks like I’m just seeing a little bleed coming from one door bottom between the belt moulding and the door; I suspect the clips. The plan is to have the hatch seam done professionally and woolwaxing or fluid filming inside it, pull tail lights and treat that cavity, pull beltline moldings treat seams and inner doors, pull door sill moldings and treat inner rockers, obviously do the whole chassis along with all other underbody cracks and crevasses. Front skidplate is starting to cheese too so we’ll do that as well. Thoughts and suggestions are welcome and encouraged. I’ll preface this post with the fact that I’m a gearhead engineer who collects a few cars, I know my way around the ol toolbox and I’m intimately familiar with the fluid film products but not so much with woolwax (or other products that get relatively hard) nor do I profess to know a whole lot about 100s. I actually bought this to sell but my lady likes it too much, now I kinda do too so we’re gunna sell the POS JK and go with the LX. Here is what I’m looking at:

I don't live in the NE so I can't really help you. But I will say I expected WAAAAAAY more rust than what I see in these pictures. The undercarriage especially looks pretty good!

Yes its not bad, I want to keep it that way. Its just starting and I want to take the steps necessary to stop it dead in its tracks. I was very curious to see to what extent owners have gone to keep their 100s from succumbing to the Northeast calcium chloride and salt brine..

I have worse rust on some body panels, I'm still figuring out what I want to do. Some body places say buy a southern door off of a parts truck. I'd prefer to grind the rust off, patch, and paint. But obviously easier said than done. Some of your spots seem small so you may be able to get away with a wire brush and re paint. The sooner the better.

For the rear hatch, I would definitely recommend replacing the hatch handle. It wasn't too had of a replacement and I was able to spray some rust treatment in the hatch since I had a lot of the components out. Here's my small post on this subject. Btw, St. John is a beautiful island! Was just down there in April.
