I don't need a new clutch just yet, but I can see the handwritting on the wall. How much are parts? Will / might someone charge for the whole job? And, is it a do-able project for a guy with no special tools (like me) and no special skills (like me)?

I dont know what a mechanic would charge, but you can get a clutch kit from CCOT for $250 and up depending on what is needed. Just so you know, the transmission needs to be pulled to do the job, and you should replace the rear main seal on the engine while you (or your mechanic) are in there. Dont forget to have the flywheel re-surfaced as well. I just did this two months ago to my 73 FJ40, not terribly difficult but it is fiddly at times. Especially since I did it from underneath without pulling the fueltank and transmission cover. I used a transmission jack, but if I had to do over again I would bite the bullet and remove the trans cover which would make it a lot easier. And 6-ton jackstands are definately worth the extra money.
Good Luck
