New ARB "BASE Rack" Roof Rack

This appears to be incorrect. Doing a Google Image search, I can't find any TLC's before 2013, whether US or otherwise that have the shark fin. In this Consumer Reports review of the 2012 (US version, Connecticut plates) there is clearly no fin. If Slee indeed has a 2010 with a fin, it must've been added, or perhaps they are mistaken about the year. This is a 2010 US spec'ed TLC from US News, there is no fin: https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/toyota/land-cruiser/2010/photos-exterior
Buy one of the short racks from Slee or go buy another rack. Geez.

This becoming asinine but as someone who owns an '11, mine has a fin. Also, go on Autotrader and look at '10, '11, and '13s for sale. I think you'll see they all have fins.

Here are some '10s with them.

Yup, this is long past asinine. Not sure what's up with the fins then....maybe some had them, some didn't? Or Consumer Reports and US News are using the wrong pictures? All I know is mine doesn't have a fin and I need super low clearance. I was super stoked about what was originally "released" and the new redesign (plus discontinuing the original) is disappointing in that regard. I'm going to leave it at that....this is beating a dead horse.

Since nobody beat me to it, here are images showing the height from the roof to the top of the factory rack at the front, middle, and rear roof mounts. Hopefully I got the tape measure against the roof as I didn't get up on something to make sure when I took the photos. It looks like the ARB rack ends up adding a couple of inches of extra height. But it's somewhat tough to come up with how the numbers compare because the real question is what is the height at the highest point of the vehicle with the factory rack versus the ARB rack. Assuming the ARB rack sits level, it will be relatively easy to get the number for the ARB rack. But it's tougher with the factory rack and when an extra inch is the difference between having clearance and damaging something, the numbers obviously matter. If measuring from the ground, the measurements need to be done on the same vehicle because tire size and suspension will affect the overall height.

My clearance limitation is where the bottom of the garage door ends up when it's fully open as that's the low point I'm up against.

Either way, I still feel that ARB made the correct decision to go with one rack mount that fits all 200 series LC's.

Okay, so it's 2 years affected, whatever. The point remains that for people like me, without the fin, who were looking forward to a very low profile "FR style" rack, this sucks, especially after waiting a year for it to be available again. I may be in the minority, but I'm still going to point this out for the minority of people who are affected by this. You aren't and don't care that it's an inch or two higher? Great, go buy the new Base Rack then. It's a deal killer for me and likely others out there and I think this whole fiasco reflects poorly on the company. Hopefully this is the last time I have to kick this stupid horse.

Probably should have posted here earlier. We had these kits available since Dec 2020. We just did not market it since we did not think there were people that wanted it. I guess I was wrong. :)

I've been looking for one roughly since they did a promo giveaway with Overland Bound right when they were "launched". After not winning the promo, I started looking to buy one, apparently by this point they were pulled cause I could only find the rack itself, no LC200 kit or mounting option. Considered the existing ARB rail system but wasn't able to determine if it'd work with the Base Rack so figured I'd just wait. In that time, I've been sold on the Gamiviti, not only the product itself, but the company. I've heard nothing but great things about Tim and I'm actually looking forward to forking over my hard earned dough to him. I'm sure you'll have no trouble selling the lower profile Base Racks.....there may not be a huge market for them out there, but for a low profile FR style rack,, the original Base Rack is about the only option (or at least the best) that I'm aware of unless folks want to take their chances with the questionable Rhino Rack aluminum rivet mounting system.

Impossible to:
  • believe the original style satisfied your low profile requirement, but the new style does not. When, you don't even know the starting or ending point. The new style base rack likely remains one of the lowest profile on the market. Gamiviti is a sweet rack and might even be lower profile, but they will both be close.
  • be on board with your conclusion that ARB and Rhino rack somehow aren't reputable. You keep quoting some crap about the Rhino mounting system, but they have a stringer system like most other brands, and other mounting systems.
  • care about your sourcing of youtube, us news and consumer reports
  • sympathize that you were somehow outed by ARB
  • agree that ARB products are somehow less reputable do to how they dealt with this

Okay, great, thanks for your opinion. Have a nice day.

It's not 2 years... it's every year in either the LC200 or LX except 2012. ;)

I had/have the same issue with the garage door. I followed the steps here and got an extra inch of clearance:

I also move the switch that stops the garage door from going further up and that gave me another 1/4". The switch is on the rail close to the opener unit.

Cool and thanks for posting that - I had no idea it might be THAT easy to adjust the height. Even if I don't end up getting a roof rack, I'm going to look into this because it might resolve a related issue I have with the non-adjustable hatch height on the LC - if I don't pull in just enough, the top hatch makes contact with some of the hardware on the door and getting the door pulled up further will, I think, resolve that (there's no clearance issue with the hatch if the garage door is closed).

I enjoyed his technique (in the video) of dropping some of the hardware :).

If by "FR style rack" you mean "FrontRunner style rack" then why not just get the low-Profile FrontRunner rack:

Low Profile FrontRunner Rack

Note: this is NOT the full height FrontRunner rack version which was the only version available until recently, shown here:

Higher Profile FrontRunner Rack

Unfortunately, due to high demand, the Low Profile version is currently out of stock, but may be well worth the wait for some.

HTH

@DPA200 based on the images in the post that I've attached, do you think a Gobi ladder would work with the ARB base rack?
I am currently asking myself the same question after I have now ordered a base rack (and hopefully it will arrive before Christmas)

If you look at the pictures of ARB it should fit but from the place at the Land Cruiser

Installed one of the low-height models (now NLA apparently) on my 2008 that does not have the shark fin antenna. I dig it. Hopefully the GFC Super Lite will be on it soon, but the availability of solutions offered by ARB to mount a tent to their rack are severely lacking at this time.

How is the wind noise on the full long rack you have? I have the 61” version and I do not really hear it.

I don't notice any wind noise from mine. At least not that I can hear over the tires (Toyo A/T2 are noisy for an all terrain...)
